Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Stanford
April 10, 1999
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team jumped back into PAC-10 Conference contention with a doubleheader sweep of #8 Stanford on Saturday.
Oregon State, ranked 13th in the nation (31-12, 4-4 PAC-10), won the first game 1-0, and then won the nightcap 3-0.
The Beavers used great pitching and timely hitting to win the first game. Tarrah Beyster pitched the complete game, giving up only 4 hits and striking out 7, improving her record to 18-7. OSUs game-winning hit came in the top of the seventh inning off the bat of Courtney Stewart. Stewarts two-out single scored Brooke Rutschman for the only run of the game.
Beavers' coach Kirk Walker called Stewarts hit, "One of her biggest hits of the year. It was great to see the team come up with a run in the last inning."
Oregon State started the second game with an unearned run in the first inning, but the major damage was a two-run home run by Jenni Jodoin in the fourth inning.
That was all that Crystal Draper needed as she picked up her 13th win of the season (13-5). She gave up 6 hits and struck out 7, walking only two. Beyster came in to record the last out after Draper surrendered a hit and issued a walk putting the tying run at the plate.
Walker was pleased with the combination of Draper and Jodoin, "The two-run home run by Jodoin made it a tougher task with Draper on the mound. Draper did a great job keeping the Stanford hitters off balance with her change-up."
Walker summed up the afternoon by saying, "These were two very huge wins. Taking two wins on the road and in conference was very important for our team."
