Jimmy Haywood Officially a Beaver
November 25, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - Jimmy Haywood of Franklin High School in Seattle has signed a national letter of intent to play mens basketball at Oregon State University, it was announced Wednesday by Beaver Head Coach Eddie Payne.
Haywood, who is a senior this year, is a 62" guard who averaged 14.5 points and 5.0 rebounds last season. He is a two-time second team 4A all-state selection and two-time first team All-KingCo pick.
"I chose Oregon State University because of its proximity to my home and my family will be able to see me play a number of times," Haywood said. "I consider my strengths my shooting ability and defense."
Haywood is a member of the Orange County Register (Cal.) second team "Fab 15", a list of top prep players on the West Coast as selected by sportswriter Frank Burlison. He was also listed by USA Today as one of the top 15 prep players in the state of Washington.
"Jimmy has athleticism, speed, and quickness -- all the qualities we need on the perimeter," Payne said. "He is another piece of the puzzle in our recruiting efforts. He will make immediate contributions."
Haywood joins forward Brian Jackson and guard Mike Cokley of Knappa, Ore., as the early signees. The early period concluded Nov. 18. The Beavers have two scholarships remaining for the late signing period which begins April 7 and extends to May 15.
