Beyster Breaks Record as OSU Softball Earns Co-Champs at UNLV Classic
February 21, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tarrah Beyster became Oregon States all-time leader for strikeouts as she pitched a complete game victory for the Beaver softball team at the UNLV Classic on Sunday.
The Beavers (10-3) beat Pacific University 4-1 to up their record to a perfect 5-0 for the tournament. Their efforts earned them the title of co-champions with UCLA, who also was 5-0 for the tournament.
Beysters seven strikeouts today put her at 357 for her career, breaking the old mark of 355, which was set by Joan Harvey in 1985.
Offensively, the Beavers were led by Jodi Chmielewski, Kelli Kranz, and Beyster, who were all put in two hits.
The scoring started in the third inning when Beyster had a two-run double, putting the Beavers up for good. Pacific came back with a run of their own in the fourth, but OSU responded in the sixth when Jenni Jodoin drilled a two-run home run, knocking in Kranz in the process.
"Overall for the tournament, it was very educational," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "We were put into a lot of different situations, and responded very well."
The Beavers had four players bat over .400 for the tournament: Chmielewski (.500), Beyster (.500), Feldt (.438), and Chinn (.400). Beyster also had 5 RBIs for the weekend.
"Offensively, some people did a great job with clutch hitting, and we took advantage of the runners we had on base," said Walker. "Tara had a very good tournament and pitched as well as Ive ever seen her throw."
The Oregon State softball team travels next to New Mexico State, for a tournament beginning February 25.
