Beavers hit the road on a roll
September 22, 1998
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 23
Oregon State at Gonzaga, 4 p.m.
Oregon State (3-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) is on a roll as it heads for this week's lone game at Gonzaga (3-3-0, 0-0-0 West Coast). The Beavers have won 3 straight - all of them shutouts - to climb above .500 for the first time since late in the 1996 season.
"I've been very happy," OSU head coach Jimmy Conway said of the Beavers' progress through the first 2 weekends of the season. "I'd liked to have gotten a few more players in Sunday and the same with Saturday (in a weekend sweep of Florida International and Western Washington), but the occasion didn't give me the opportunity.
"I want everybody to know they could be stepping in at any time."
That could be especially true on Wednesday, when the Beavers play their third game in just 5 days. OSU will be winding up a busy stretch when it plays in Spokane, but it could wind up a very successful stretch, as well.
OSU's winning streak is its longest since early in 1996, and marks the first time since 1995 that the Beavers have shut out 3 straight opponents.
"We just want things to keep going the way they are," Conway said. He thinks the Beavers have taken to the method of play installed near the end of spring practice.
"The kids felt more comfortable with it," Conway said. "Sometimes you can help with a system, but it all comes down to the players. I do think it's helped us in not conceding too many goals. We're happy in that area and want to keep it that way."
Meanwhile, OSU has been creating chances of its own.
"We probably should have scored 1 or 2 more goals Sunday (against Florida International)," Conway said. "We had better opportunities than they had. That's a good sign, because it was against fairly good opposition, and that's how you judge this game - how you do against good opposition."
Gonzaga is coming off a split last weekend in Southern California, having lost 1-0 to 10th-ranked UCLA and then winning 5-0 over Cal-Santa Barbara. The Bulldogs' losses have all been to top-flight competition, with a 2-1 defeat at No. 1-ranked Washington and a 2-0 loss at Cal-Irvine.
"They'll be very strong," Conway said of the Bulldogs. "They'll be looking to take the game to us - that's the way they play. They're physically very strong and we have to match that, and I think we're capable of doing that. They were a good, solid team last year and I think they're going that way this year.
"We're looking to have a solid team and I think we're getting that way."
GU's leading scorers are sophomore midfielder Jason Kuska, with 8 points on 3 goals and 2 assists, and junior forward Brett Fink, with 8 points on 4 goals. Freshman midfielder Abba Faridnia and junior defender/midfielder Mike Blasdel both have 6 points on 3 goals. Senior goalkeeper Josh Fouts has a 1.00 goals-against average and 2 shutouts.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: OSU leads the all-time series with Gonzaga 10-2-1 but is on a 2-game losing streak against the Bulldogs. The Beavers lost twice to GU last season, 3-1 in Corvallis and 3-0 in Spokane. OSU's last win in the series was 3-2 in overtime in Corvallis in 1996; the Beavers also beat GU 3-0 in Spokane earlier in 1996.
Everybody's ready to go
INJURY REPORT: OSU will have all its players available for the game at Gonzaga. Beavers open home slate with pair of shutouts
LAST WEEK: Oregon State picked up a pair of shutout victories, opening its home schedule by beating Western Washington 3-0 on Sept. 19 and Florida International 1-0 on Sept. 20. Beaver goalkeeper Bryan Hill was named the MPSF Player of the Week for his efforts, as he made 9 saves while posting the pair of shutouts.
Against WWU, J.P. Capodanno scored in the first minute and the final minute and also had an assist; Ben Roth added the other goal while Greg Howes had 3 assists and Josh McCarty had 1 assist.
Against FIU, the only score came on an own goal as a defender deflected a cross by Fredrik Kummernes and it bounced over the goalkeeper early in the second half.
OSU's way is the Conway
OSU HEAD COACH JIMMY CONWAY: Jimmy Conway, the only head coach at OSU since soccer became a varsity sport in 1988, is in his 11th season with the Beavers. Conway has a record of 93-80-12 at Oregon State. He was Mountain Division Coach of the Year in 1995 and Northwest Colleges Soccer Conference Coach of the Year in 1990.

NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Oregon State will get several chances to knock off a nationally-ranked team this season, as the Beavers play 2 teams ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll this week: No. 1 Washington at home on Oct. 30, and at No. 10 UCLA on Nov. 15. The Beavers also play 2 teams that received votes this week but were not ranked in the top 25: Cal State-Fullerton and Stanford.
Fredrik the great
FREDRIK KUMMERNES: Senior midfielder and team captain Fredrik Kummernes (Kristiansund, Norway/Atlanten Videregaaende) has been a big part of OSU's attack throughout his career. He scored OSU's first goal of the season on a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss to San Diego on Sept. 11; that moved him into a tie for sixth place on OSU's career goals list with 15. He was credited with an assist on Florida International's own goal in a 1-0 OSU win on Sept. 20; that gave him 45 career points and moved him into a tie for fifth on OSU's all-time list. It also gave Kummernes 15 career assists, moving him within 1 of a share of the school record in that category. Among the MPSF leaders, this week Kummernes is tied for 31st in scoring.
Tough to get past this Hill
BRYAN HILL: Junior goalkeeper Bryan Hill (Visalia, Calif./Whitney HS) became the national leader in goals-against average by blanking Western Washington and Florida International the weekend of Sept. 19-20. Hill has a 0.00 goals-against average after not allowing a score in 315 minutes in the net this fall. Those shutouts also gave Hill 7 career shutouts, earning him sole possession of third place on OSU's all-time list. He is also second on the school's career saves list with 108. Hill has yet to allow a goal this season; he got his first action of 1998 in the second half of a season-opening 2-1 loss to San Diego on Sept. 11 with the Beavers already trailing 2-0. His 0.00 goals-against average ties him for first in the MPSF and he is sixth in saves with 10.
A tip of the Capodanno
J.P. CAPODANNO: Junior forward J.P. Capodanno (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur HS) is back on the Beaver roster after taking last year off from school, and he has quickly made an impact on the Beaver offense. Capodanno is tied for the team lead in scoring with 5 points on 2 goals and 1 assist, netting all those points in a 3-0 win over Western Washington on Sept. 19. Capodanno is also tied for the team lead in shots with 15, and his presence has taken some of the focus of OSU's opponents off of teammate Freddy Kummernes.
Capodanno's effort vs. WWU also moved him onto a number of OSU career lists: he is now ninth in scoring with 28 points; tied for ninth in assists with 6; and 10th in goals with 11. Among the MPSF leaders, this week Capodanno is tied for 21st in scoring.
Howes it going
GREG HOWES: The arrival of junior midfielder Greg Howes (Tacoma, Wash./Franklin Pierce HS/Pierce CC) has added to the physical factor of Oregon State's play in the midfield, and has given OSU a bit more scoring punch. Howes is tied for the team scoring lead with 5 points on 1 goal and 3 assists; he netted the goal in a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount on Sept. 13 and had all 3 assists in a 3-0 win over Western Washington on Sept. 19. He also has a share of the team lead in shots with 15. Among the MPSF leaders, this week Howes is tied for fourth in assists and tied for 21st in scoring.
Taking the local
OSU'S MID-VALLEY PLAYERS: Oregon State didn't have to look far to fill many of its roster spots. There are 5 Beavers who played at the 2 high schools in town, Corvallis and Crescent Valley: junior goalkeeper Jake Smith (Corvallis), sophomore midfielder Daniel Angelo (Crescent Valley), sophomore forward Scott Tedder (Crescent Valley, before transferring to Marist in Eugene), redshirt freshman defender Jake Fenner (Crescent Valley) and freshman midfielder Nick Jensen (Crescent Valley).

LORENZ FIELD AT VALLEY STADIUM: Oregon State's soccer facility, Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium, provides soccer enthusiasts with one of the top places to both play and watch the sport on the West Coast.
The main seating section, located on the west sideline, has a capacity of approximately 1,000. It rises well above field level and puts most fans near midfield to get a better picture of what was happening on the pitch.
This fall, the media and statistics crews will also enjoy a better vantage point as they begin using the press box behind the back row of the west sideline seats.
Smaller sections of seats and standing room areas now circle the rest of the field, bringing capacity to approximately 1,500.
OSU is 8-10-2 on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, which opened for the 1996 season.
The stadium is located a block southeast of Parker Stadium, just south of the intersection of 17th Street and Western Boulevard.
Leave it to Beavers
OSU ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have 1 of its games this fall televised on Fox Sports Northwest. The Nov. 4 home game against Portland will be shown on a tape-delay basis at a time and date to be announced.
