Beavers Fall to ASU, 77-65
February 21, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State spotted the Arizona State Sun Devils a 10-point halftime lead and the hurdle was too big to overcome as the Beavers fell to ASU 77-65 in women's basketball at Gill Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the fifth straight for the Beavers and third straight at Gill Coliseum. OSU is now 11-13 overall and 3-12 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while the Sun Devils improved to 11-12 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
After falling behind 40-30 at halftime, OSU stormed back to tie the contest at 51-51 with 13:59 left in the game. The Beavers could never get the lead in the second half and the game was tied for the final time at 55-55 with 9:13 to play.
ASU's Natalie Tucker hit the front end of a two shot free throw with 8:53 to play to give the Devils' a 56-55 lead and freshman forward Theresea Jantzen followed Tucker's missed second shot with a rebound lay-up to give ASU a three-point lead and that play appeared to have broken the Beavers back as the Devils' ran off six straight points.
ASU's two post players, Jantzen and center Rachel Holt, demolished Oregon State. Jantzen scored a career high 28 points, hitting 10 of 12 from the field, and Holt added 18 points, hitting 6 of 8 from the floor, as the Beavers' post defense was non existent.
Freshman forward Felicia Ragland kept OSU close with a career high 17 points. Sissel Pierce scored 16 points and matched her career best with 5 blocked shots. Tammy Arnold scored 11 points.
Arizona State shot .521 from the field for the game, with many of its shots coming on wide open layins.
Rebounding favored ASU 32-29.
As has been the case for much of the season, Oregon State had more field goals than its opponent, 26 to 25, but were beaten badly at the free throw line. The Sun Devils hit 24 of 31 attempts from the charity line, compared to 10 of 13 by OSU.
The Beavers will host Oregon on Friday night at Gill Coliseum in their final home game of the 1998-99 season.
