OSU falls in baseball, but streak goes on
May 1, 1999
STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon States Joe Gerber extended his hitting streak to 19 games but the Beavers lost to No. 6 Stanford 10-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Gerber went 2-for-5 with a double for OSU (15-32 overall, 3-14 Pacific-10), which wraps up its three-game series against the Cardinal (32-12, 16-4) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Gerber wasted no time in adding to his hitting streak on Saturday, driving the first pitch he saw from Cardinal starter Justin Wayne into left-center field for a single. Gerber later added a double in the ninth inning; during his streak, hes batting .494 (39-for-79) with nine doubles, eight homers and 35 runs batted in.
Gerbers single helped OSU take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Brian Duerr reached on an error by Stanford third baseman Josh Hochgesang, Gerbers single moved him to third base and then Tim Dryden drove Duerr home with a single just inside the bag at third base.
Duerr was a late addition to the lineup after the Beavers lost their second player to injury in as many days. Regular third baseman Josh Carter took a bad-hop ground ball in the face in batting practice and was unable to play; hes questionable for Sundays game. OSU is also without rightfielder K.C. Rumrey for the weekend after he developed swelling in his left knee on Thursday night.
OSU had chances to add to its 1-0 lead but left five runners on base in the first two innings. Stanford finally got to Beaver starting pitcher B.R. Cook in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on four hits, a walk, a hit batter and an error.
Oregon State got a run back in the top of the fourth when Troy Schader led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Bryan Ingram and scored on Eric Starks single to left. But Stanford scored four more times in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-2, using three hits, a hit batter and a walk; a passed ball and an error made two of the runs unearned.
Stanford added a final run against Cook on Edmund Muths solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 9-2. Cook took the loss to end his two-game winning streak; in 4 1/3 innings, he gave up nine runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks, striking out six.
Brett Strode then allowed one run on three hits in a three-inning relief stint for the Beavers, walking two and striking out two. Hal Ranstad got the final two outs for Oregon State without allowing a baserunner.
OSU picked up a run in the top of the seventh when Corrie Willkie doubled, went to third on Jeff Sakamotos single and scored on a wild pitch. The Beavers got their final two runs in the ninth, as Duerr singled, went to third on Gerbers double down the left-field line, and both runners scored on Curtis Davis double to right.
Justin Wayne pitched the win for Stanford. In seven innings, he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks, striking out eight.
