STILLWATER, Okla. - Oregon State 149-pounder Oscar Wood was beaten by top-ranked T.J. Williams of Iowa 11-5 on Monday night in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Dual Meet at Oklahoma State. Wood, ranked second nationally, went into the match with a 22-3 record; Williams, from Iowa, was 26-0.
Wood was within 6-4 after scoring an escape early in the third period. Williams managed a takedown to go up 8-4 with 1:47 left in the match, though, and Wood was never within three points the rest of the way.
Williams scored the matchs first takedown 20 seconds into the first period, but Wood escaped just seven seconds later and the bout was tied 1-1 after the opening period.
Wood opened the second period in the up position but Williams managed a reversal 10 seconds into the period to go in front 4-1. Wood escaped, only to have Williams take him down again midway through the period. Another Wood escape made it 6-3 after two periods.
In the third period, after Wood fell behind 8-4, he managed an escape to cut the gap to 8-5 with 1:45 left. However, Williams was awarded a point with 18 seconds left, then took Wood down with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Wood and the rest of the 17th-ranked Beavers will be at home this weekend for a pair of Dads Weekend duals, meeting eighth-ranked Arizona State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Boise State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
