Volleyball Defeats Ohio University in Three Games
September 13, 1998
ATHENS, Ohio - Gina Schmidt had 14 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team (8-1) to a 3-0 win over Ohio University (4-3) Sunday evening. Game scores were 15-8, 15-13 and 15-8.
The opening game started off close until the Beavers took a 7-5 lead and scored five unanswered points. OU later scored three points off OSU errors to close the gap to 12-8, but a tip from Selina Scoble gave the ball back to the Beavers, who put the game away after three Bobcat hitting errors.
Game two brought back visions of Saturday night's match against Xavier, when the Beavers let considerable leads slip away in every game. This time, OSU opened up with a 6-0 lead over the Bobcats, but Ohio came back to tie the game at 8-8. The Beavers were able to get the lead back up to 12-8, but OU responded again. A 14-11 OSU lead dwindled down to 14-13, forcing a Beaver timeout. The Bobcats' next attempt went long, and then a block from Angie Shirley and Brandi Bonnarens finally finished off the game.
It was Oregon State's turn to come from behind in game three, as Ohio took a 4-0 lead on the Beavers. OSU battled back to tie the game at 6-6, went on to take the lead and never trailed from that point on.
In addition to Schmidt's double-figure performance, Krista Kinsman (13), Sarah Bjeldanes (12) and Angie Shirley (12) also had double-digit kills. Bjeldanes also led the Beavers with 10 digs.
"We played a little tired, which we kind of expected. I thought Gina did a nice job, and we were able to use her in a couple spots," said Mozzochi. "Brandi started off inconsistent but steadied out a bit and came back to do a nice job.
"Our outside hitters showed we've got some depth in that spot. A couple of our outside hitters started off shaky, but we made some changes and brought them back in later," Mozzochi said. "This was a good team effort, but now we can't wait to get back to actual practice and get ready for the Ducks."
The Beavers open Pacific-10 play Friday, September 18 at Oregon in a 7:00 p.m. Civil War contest.
