Jodoin's three-run homer lifts OSU over No. 1 UCLA
May 2, 1999
LOS ANGELES - Jenni Jodoin hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the No. 8 Oregon State softball team a 5-3 victory over No. 1 UCLA in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Bruins came back with a 10-1 win in the five-inning nightcap.
OSU improved to 40-19 overall and tied the school record for single-season wins that was set back in 1984. The Beavers are 11-11 in the Pacific-10. UCLA upped its record to 51-4 overall and 18-4 in the league.
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the opener when Christine Ambrosi homered in the Bruins' first at-bat, but Michelle Chariton tied things up in the third after scoring on Jodi Chmielewski's sacrifice fly to left field.
UCLA added two more runs in the fifth inning when the Bruins scored twice on two hits and an OSU error. The Beavers threatened in the sixth inning with three hits, but they scored only once and left two runners on base.
The Bruins went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the sixth inning to head into the final frame with a 3-2 advantage. Shawna Feldt led off the top of the seventh with a base hit. Brooke Rutschman and Jodi Chmielewski both hit into fielders choices to give the Beavers two outs. Then, with Chmielewski on first, the Bruins walked Tarrah Beyster to bring up Jodoin, who hit her fifth home run of the year to put the Beavers on top.
UCLA failed to score in the bottom of the inning as the Beavers defeated the top-ranked Bruins for the second time this year. Beyster allowed just four hits for the game as she improved to 24-10 on the season. Amanda Freed took the loss for UCLA and dropped to 22-3.
But, after having just four hits in the opener, the Bruin bats came out in full force in the second game with 10 hits and three home runs.
OSU scored its only run in the first inning, when Rutschman walked and scored on Jodoin's double. The Bruins countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to end OSUs brief lead.
UCLA scored three more runs in the fourth inning before hitting two home runs -- including a grand slam from Lupe Brambila -- in the fifth inning to end the game on the eight run rule.
Crystal Draper pitched 3.1 innings and picked up the loss, dropping to 16-9 on the year. Amy Borbiro pitched one inning for the Beavers. Courtney Dale remained unbeaten at 26-0 on the season. She allowed just four Beaver hits.
