Men's Golf Team Concludes Season
May 28, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - RECAP: The Oregon State University mens golf program continued its transition in 1997-98 under the direction of second-year Head Coach Mike Ketcham. The Beavers gradual youth movement continued, and there are some positive signs for what the future holds. The Beavers finished in the top-10 eight times during the course of the year, including capturing the Oregon Duck team title in early March. The team also posted a trio of sixth place finishes, at the Relia Star Collegiate, Nike Northwest Classic and Taylor Made Intercollegiate.
JANSON/ARVIDSON EARN HONORS: Team members senior Chris Janson and freshman Anthony Arvidson earned Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention acclaim for their efforts during the 1997-98 season. Janson, who finished the year ranked 86th in the MasterCard Collegiate Rankings, averaged 74.9 strokes per round. Arvidson averaged 74.4. Janson posted three top-10 finishes, while Arvidson posted two. Arvidson won the lone individual title for Oregon State, winning the Oregon Duck Invitational with a three-round total of 210.
THREE NEWCOMERS TO JOIN: Mike Ketcham and the Beaver golf program will have three newcomers joining the program this fall. The group is headed by Dustin Wayne from Chabot Junior College. Wayne rejoins his Chabot teammate Justin Johnson at Oregon State. Ketcham also expects true-freshmen Chance Holmes of San Antonio, Texas and John Lepak of La Habra, Cal., to make immediate contributions.
THE ROSTER: The 1998-99 roster will have a nice mix of veterans and youth. Seniors Kyle Hudson, who redshirted in 1997-98, and Justin Johnson are proven leaders. The junior class will include two-year lettermen players Eric Dahm and David Crowell, as well as junior college transfer Dustin Wayne. Anthony Arvidson is the lone sophomore, while the freshmen class includes redshirts Noel Smith, Todd Deacon and Jason Adams, and true-freshmen John Lepak and Chance Holmes.
FALL SCHEDULE UPDATE: As of May 28 Oregon State will participate in five fall tournaments. The Beavers will open the season at the William Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque Sept. 17-19. OSU will also make trips to the Pacific Invitational in Copperpolis, Cal., Sept. 20-22, the Husky Invitational Sept. 27-29, and the Fresno Lexus Class Oct. 16-18. The highlight of the fall schedule will be the Nike Northwest Classic at Corvallis Trysting Tree Golf Club Oct. 4-6.
