Beavers Sign Jake Huffman
April 29, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has signed Jake Huffman of Scio to a national letter of intent, OSU wrestling coach Joe Wells announced Tuesday. Huffman was a three-time Class 2A state champion for the Loggers.
"Jake will be a very big addition to our program," Wells said. "He'll be one of the people providing some competitive challenges to those guys in the 174- and 184-pound classes."
(Note: The new collegiate weight classes for the 1998-99 season add seven pounds to each of the 1997-98 weight classes; hence the 174 and 184 designations.)
Huffman won his titles for Scio at three different weights: 171 pounds as a senior, 160 pounds as a junior and 151 pounds as a sophomore. Also, Huffman was a three-time Tri-River Conference all-league pick in football and a two-time all-league pick in baseball.
"He's a good athlete," Wells said. "He's been very committed to the sport and done well. He's a good student and a bright kid."
In choosing Oregon State, Huffman follows in the footsteps of another Logger, Chad Flack. After graduating from Scio, Flack wrestled for OSU from 1993-96 and was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
Huffman is the third wrestler to sign with OSU this spring. Casey Horn, a 125/133-pounder from North Salem High in Salem, and 174/184-pounder Jason Lovell from Cascade High in Turner. Wells said OSU expects to announce more signings at a later date.
The Beavers (9-9 overall duals, 4-4 Pacific-10) placed second as a team in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships and tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships. That was OSU's fourth top-10 finish at the national meet in the past five seasons.
