OSU men beaten by penalty kick
October 2, 1998
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Oregon State saw its mens soccer unbeaten streak end at four games on Friday afternoon as the Beavers lost to Air Force 1-0 on a controversial penalty kick in the 76th minute. OSU (3-2-1 overall) will wrap up the Air Force Tournament on Sunday by meeting New Mexico for third place.
Against Air Force, the Beavers were in a scoreless tie until the 76th minute. OSUs Greg Howes was called for a foul of Ryan Sagastume in the penalty area and the Falcons (3-4-1) were awarded a penalty kick; Ryan Schaeffer converted for the games only goal.
"It was a horrible call - he decided the game," OSU assistant coach Ryan Jorden said of the official. "The ball was played in on a corner, straight up in the air 16 yards out. Greg was standing there, with a wide base, the ball came out of the sky and he settled it, and he (the official) called a penalty kick."
The Air Force goal was the first allowed this season by Beaver goalkeeper Bryan Hill, ending his streaks of four straight shutouts and 510 scoreless minutes. OSU was outshot 15-9 in the game.
"Theyre a very athletic, very fit team and they worked extremely hard," Jorden said of Air Force. "At times we played well, but we didnt play consistently. We let them dictate the game a little too much instead of us dictating it ... weve got to make a conscious effort all the way through to dictate the game. If we do, well do some good things."
In the tournaments other opening-round game, Denver beat New Mexico 3-0.
