OSU drops dual to Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. - Oregon State lost to Washington 153-100 on Saturday in Pacific-10 womens swimming at Husky Pool. The meet was part of the Washington Five-Way, but OSUs portion of the competition was scored as a dual meet.
The top finishes for the Beavers (1-1 overall duals, 0-1 Pacific-10) were second places by Erica Stephens in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley and by Sheila Tehranchi in the 100-yard breaststroke.
"We need to learn to swim tired," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "One of the biggest adjustments when you come to college is learning to swim tired. Its an aerobic sport and you perform best when youre rested, and thats maybe once or twice a year.
"We needed the two weeks between the San Jose State meet and this weekend for hard training ... our main goal is the Speedo Cup and the Pacific-10 Championships, and were trying to get in shape for those meets."
But, Podkoscielny pointed out, aiming at those two meets doesnt mean not being competitive in the rest of the seasons events.
"We got better, in some cases, as things went along," Podkoscielny said. "Some positive things happened, but that doesnt change the fact we need to be able to swim tired ... we havent made that adjustment yet.
"This was a good experience for us. Its a good thing it happened this wya, because it will make our freshmen and everyone on our team work even harder."
Oregon State swims against Utah and Nevada-Las Vegas next Saturday in Salt Lake City.
