Late lapses cost OSU in 10-5 baseball loss
April 12, 1999
TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State saw Arizona score all of its runs with two outs in the late innings as the Beavers fell 10-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Frank Sancet Field. OSU (12-24 overall, 1-8 Pacific-10) couldnt put the Wildcats (25-16, 7-8) away as they scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and then added four runs in the eighth.
The Beavers start a five-game homestand when they meet Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday in a pair of 3 p.m. games at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Those games wont count in the Pacific-10 standings; Oregon State returns to conference play on Friday when it opens a three-game series against California.
OSU appeared on the verge of taking the final game of the series at Arizona when it built a 3-0 lead on Jeff Sakamotos run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Joe Gerbers two-run double in the sixth. Beaver starter Mark Newell, strong through the first five innings, ran into control problems in the sixth and Arizona tied the game on three walks, two hit batters and a balk.
The Beavers went back in front 4-3 in the top of the seventh on Curtis Davis run-scoring single to left.
In the bottom of the inning, Arizona loaded the bases with two out for Kenny Huff. Huff hit a drive into the teeth of a brisk wind blowing in from right field, giving OSU rightfielder K.C. Rumrey time to get under the ball on the edge of the warning track, but the ball popped out of Rumreys glove and all three runners scored to put the Wildcats up 6-4.
Arizona picked up four more runs off OSU reliever Travis Rainwater in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-4. Oregon State picked up its final run on Josh Carters RBI double in the top of the ninth.
Carter was 3-for-5 for the Beavers and Sakamoto was 2-for-3, while Rumrey, Gerber and Eric Stark were all 2-for-4. Newell took the loss, falling to 3-4 as he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits and six walks while striking out five.
