SMITH PUTS BIG PLAY BACK INTO OSU OFFENSE: Jonathan Smith has put the "Big Play" back into the OSU offense...Smith, a walk-on redshirt freshman quarterback, had a day he will remember for the rest of his life in OSU's 35-34 setback at Washington two weeks ago...Smith, playing in only his third Beaver game, entered the contest in the second quarter and again midway through the third quarter and proceeded to shatter OSU's single-game passing record...after his record breaking performance at Washington, he started against California...since he has been OSU's quarterback, the Beavers have produced 16 offensive plays over 25 yards...here is what Smith accomplished in his last two outings:

RODDY TOMPKINS: Roddy Tompkins had the greatest pass receiving day of his career to date during the first game he did not start, after starting 29 straight games in his three-year OSU career...he caught 9 passes for 210 yards, including a 90-yard TD pass, against Washington in his 30th career game...he produced 210 yards receiving against the Huskies, which is the second best mark in OSU history and the 210 all-purpose yards is the 13th best mark, and the 90-yard TD reception against Washington is the third longest pass play in OSU history, and second longest TD pass...he returned as a starter against California and has now started 30 of his 31 games as a Beaver...he caught 2 passes for 37 yards vs. California...for only the fifth time in his Beaver career, Roddy failed to catch a pass in a game (Arizona) and was completely blanked statistically...Roddy has caught a pass in 25 of the 31 games he has played for OSU...he caught 2 passes for 46 yards at Stanford...at Utah State he caught 2 passes for 14 yards...Roddy posted his best performance of the season at Arizona State with 8 receptions for 77 yards...he opened the 1998 season with 3 receptions against Nevada and followed with 1 catch against Baylor, a 14-yard touchdown, and 2 receptions at USC for 9 yards...he also caught a TD pass against Baylor as a freshman in 1996...he has 90 career receptions for 1,265 yards, and 1,440 all-purpose yards in his career...he is tied for 10th on OSU's career reception list with Lee Overton...three more receptions moves him into ninth place...Roddy's top individual game for receptions was 10 vs. UCLA in 1997.
ACADEMIC AWARDS: Each week during the 1998 football season, U.S. Bank honors a member of the Oregon State football team as the U.S. Bank Academic Player of the Week. Junior right guard Aaron Koch (3.65 GPA) was honored the week of the Nevada game and sophomore center Dustin Janz (3.10 GPA) earned the honor for the Baylor game. Redshirt sophomore guard Jared Cornell from The Dalles (2.92 GPA) earned the honor for the USC game. Keith Heyward-Johnson, a sophomore cornerback from Woodland Hills, CA, earned the honor for the ASU game with a 2.78 accumulate GPA. Senior place kicker Jose Cortez, a native of El Salvador, received the honor for the Utah State game. He posted a 2.97 GPA in his first quarter at OSU last fall in Liberal Studies. Senior wide receiver Tim Alexander was honored the week of the Stanford game. Alexander, from Sarasota, Florida, currently has a 2.89 GPA in the College of Home Economics and Education. He is a housing and interiors major. Sophomore defensive tackle Ryan Atkinson was selected for the Arizona game. Atkinson, from Santa Barbara, CA, earned a 3.16 on 21 hours during spring quarter to make the OSU Athletic Honor Roll. Atkinson is a UESP major. Sophomore punter Mike Fessler from Tigard, by way of North Carolina, earned the honor for the Washington game. Fessler had a 3.12 in winter quarter and a 3.42 in spring quarter to make the OSU Athletic Honor Roll for two straight quarters. He is in the College of Home Economics and Education and is a housing and interiors major. Special teams player Gabe Schmidtke, a junior from Tucson, Arizona, earned the honor for the California game. Schmidtke is a general science major and he posted a 3.01 GPA in the fall and a 3.57 in the spring, to earn a spot on the OSU Athletic Honor Roll and the University Honor Roll, respectively. He has an overall 2.98 GPA with 118 hours passed.
TIM ALEXANDER--Tim has touched the football only 76 times in 1998 and he has already moved into 10th place on OSU's single-season all-purpose running list with 1,168 yards...he added 128 all-purpose yards against California while only touching the football 9 times...Tim put up impressive numbers in a game against Washington...Tim accounted for 187 yards in all-purpose running while touching the football 11 times for an average of 17.0 yards per play...he caught 5 passes for a career-best 130 yards, including a 33-yard TD pass on the last play of the game to give OSU a chance at a victory over the Huskies...Washington won 35-34 as the 2-point conversion failed...he returned 4 punts 25 yards and 2 kickoffs 32 yards...he also had pass receptions for 37, 27 and 25 yards...Tim was held to 74 all-purpose yards by (Arizona)...Arizona elected to only kickoff one time to Tim...Tim was limited to only 81 all-purpose yards at Stanford as the Cardinal made a concentrated effort to kick away from Tim on all kickoffs...he caught 5 passes for 60 yards and returned 2 punts for 21 yards...Tim accounted for 174 all-purpose yards at Utah State, the fourth best in his career and second best this season...he added his second longest kickoff return, a 61-yarder and his third longest, a 43-yarder...Tim leads OSU in all-purpose running with 853 yards, an average of 121.9 per game, good enough to rank sixth in the Pac-10...Tim added another dimension to his portfolio by returning punts for the first time in the Utah State game...he had 18 yards in punt returns, 119 yards in kickoff returns and 37 yards on three pass receptions for his 174 all-purpose yards against Utah State...
