Greg Byrne Named Associate Athletic Director
August 27, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - Greg Byrne, formerly of the University of Oregon, has accepted the position of Associate Athletic Director for Development at Oregon State University, it was announced Wednesday by the Beavers Director of Athletics, Mitch Barnhart.
Byrne, 26, has been with Oregon since 1995 and has held the title of Regional Director of Development for the Duck Athletic Fund.
"I am very excited to have Greg Byrne join our staff as Associate Athletic Director for Development," Barnhart said.
"Gregs understanding of the business of intercollegiate athletics comes from a family background which has moved throughout the West Coast, and has had an impact wherever they have been," Barnhart continued. "Greg is very familiar with the State of Oregon through his efforts at the University of Oregon, and brings instant knowledge which will be very beneficial as we continue to make progress in our fund raising units."
Byrne, a 1994 graduate of Arizona State University, will officially take over his new OSU position on September 1.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to come join President Paul Risser and Mitch Barnhart and everyone involved with OSU athletics," Byrne said. "This is a tremendous opportunity to be a part of a growing program and be able to live in Oregon, a state that I love. I am looking forward to working with all Beaver boosters and I know we can get the job done if we stay focused."
Byrne replaces Scott Spiegelberg, who resigned as Executive Director of the Beaver Club on July 20, after spending eight years on the OSU athletics staff.
However, Spiegelberg plans to remain at OSU through December to help Byrne in the transition.
"Gregs extensive experience in athletic fundraising, and his familiarity with the State of Oregon, will combine to spell success for the Beaver Club and OSU Athletics," Spiegelberg said. "I am looking forward to working with Greg over the next three months to help insure a smooth transition."
Greg earned his degree, a B.S. in hotel and recreation management, from ASU in 1994. While going to school at ASU, he also worked in the guest services division for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Phoenix from 1992-94.
Byrne then spent one year with the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, AZ, as special projects coordinator, a position in which he directed over 1,000 volunteers in the development of 60 year-round events, including a parade, golf tournament, duck race and basketball tournament. He also managed a $100,000 budget to facilitate business operations for merchandise, and building and office administration.
Greg joined the University of Oregon staff in 1995. During his tenure with the Ducks, he has served as the Director of Oregon Clubs in Portland, Southern Oregon, Northern California, Central Oregon, Salem, Linn-Benton Counties, Roseburg and the coastal region.
Greg and his wife, Regina, have two sons, Nicholas, three-years-old; and Davis, 10 months old.
