OSU men fall to Cal Poly 2-1
October 9, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Missed opportunities cost Oregon State as the Beavers fell to Cal Poly 2-1 in mens soccer Friday afternoon on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium. The Beavers watched a halftime lead slip away in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams.
"We should have put it away in the first half," OSU head coach Jimmy Conway said. "We should have been five up. I was real disappointed in the second half ... it slipped away from us. I hope this brings us more together Sunday."
OSU (4-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 MPSF) plays host to Cal-Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. Sunday. It will be AYSO day, with free admission for all kids age 13 and under wearing their youth soccer jersey.
Against Cal Poly (6-3-1, 1-0-0), the winning goal came in the 86th minute off a rare assist by a goalkeeper. The Mustangs Brenton Junge took advantage of a brisk wind to loft a goal kick into the OSU box; Martin Haynes controlled the ball on a bounce and headed it past Beaver goalkeeper Bryan Hill.
"We allowed them to beat us at the back big-time," Conway said. "The long ball caused us problems. We didnt handle it well."
Cal Poly had tied the game in the 60th minute on Brian Langes penalty kick. OSU had scored the games opening goal in the 19th minute when passes by James Albert and J.P. Capodanno set Greg Howes up just inside the CPU box; he one-timed the ball and his blast bent over CPU keeper Junge.
OSU had plenty of other chances to score early. Prior to Howes goal, Fredrik Kummernes had missed a penalty kick wide right; Howes later had a shot bounce off the crossbar and he had a second-half chance go over the bar with the keeper out of position.
"I was disappointed," Conway said. "It was all there for us. But we can make up for it - there are plenty of games left. Now its important we get our morale up for Sunday."
Though OSU led 1-0 at halftime, Conway hadnt gotten the feeling that the Beavers were in sync.
"Our passing wasnt crisp enough," Conway said. "We were a bit sloppy, giving the ball away. playing too many square passes.
"The good thing we got out of this game was we played well enough to beat that team and we should have, but we didnt play our best by any means."
