Beaver Club Changes Name
December 8, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - For the past 30 years, the fund raising arm of Oregon State University athletics has been called the Beaver Club. As of December 1, the name has been changed to Beaver Athletic Scholarship Fund (BASF).
There was a definite reason for changing the name from Beaver Club to BASF, according to Greg Byrne, Oregon State's Associate Athletic Director for Development.
"The Beaver Athletic Scholarship Fund has been put in place to better emphasize the priority of raising money for our student-athlete scholarships," Byrne said. "We will have a $3.8 million scholarship bill expected for 1998-99, and last year had gross revenues of $1.7 million. We need to reemphasize our number one goal of raising enough money to pay for our scholarships on an annual basis.
"The other issue driving the name change and creating a new organization is the fact there are several matching gift companies that will match to scholarship funds, but not to clubs," Byrne said.
"The years of support by the Beaver Club organization is very much appreciated, and the new organization will carry those traditions on and help us streamline our efforts to be the most efficient fund raising organization that we can be," Byrne added.
Beaver Huddle and Beaver Club chapters around the State of Oregon will all now be called Beaver Huddles, but will be managed out of the BASF office in Gill Coliseum. When a Beaver supporter donates to the Beaver Athletic Scholarship Fund, they will automatically become a member of the local Beaver Huddle chapter.
