OSU women blanked 4-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oregon State allowed a flurry of four goals in just over nine minutes Friday afternoon as the Beavers fell to Cal State-Sacramento 4-0 in non-league womens soccer. OSU (1-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) continues its trip south with a game at Cal State-Northridge on Sunday at 4 p.m.
OSU kept Fridays game at CSUS (1-2-0 overall) scoreless until the 29th minute, when Marissa Barragan lobbed the ball over Beaver goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease off an assist by Kate Mathany. Barragan scored again in the 34th minute after passes by Lori Kerswell and Marueen Whitney.
"We played very well for almost 30 minutes, then we had a shot (by Coral Slater) hit the crossbar and not go in," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Its like were on a tightrope - if that shot doesnt go in, then we fall off one side or the other. Wed played very well to that point, then we give up four goals in nine minutes."
The Hornets surge continued resulted in another goal less than two minutes later, as Jessica Mackiewicz took a pass from Kerswell and broke away for a score to make it 3-0. Finally, Katy Nichols turned the rebound of a missed shot into a score in the 38th minute, with the assist going to Mackiewicz.
"We made defensive errors that allowed them to get three players in the box," Fennah said of OSUs play during the fateful nine minutes. "We cant allow them to do that. We made four similar mistakes. Weve got to improve our mental transition and cut those errors."
Cal State-Sacramento didnt threaten in the second half, but didnt need to. OSU, meanwhile, managed shots after halftime that hit the crossbar and hit a goalpost but wouldnt find the net.
