Terrance Bryant Named Starting Quarterback for Season Opener
August 28, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - Terrance Bryant, a junior college All-American from City College of San Francisco, has been named Oregon State's starting quarterback for the Sept. 5 season opener vs. Nevada at Parker Stadium, it was announced Friday by Beaver Head Coach Mike Riley.
Bryant and senior Tyler Tomich have been engaged in a two-way battle for the No. 1 spot since the start of fall practice. Tomich was listed No. 1 following spring drills and had been listed No. 1 on the fall depth chart prior to Friday's announcement.
"We started training camp with two quarterbacks (Bryant and Tomich) alternating basically every play with the first unit," Riley said. "They did that for 25 practices and we feel that we have two guys who can run our team. Through day-to-day evaluation, we felt Terrance came out slightly ahead. We felt it was important to name a starting quarterback at this time as we start our game preparation."
Bryant, who was not attending OSU in the spring, joined the program for the first time at the start of fall camp. Terrance earned JC All-American (JC Athletic Bureau) honors after leading CCSF to a 11-1 record and No. 2 national ranking in 1997. He led the nation (junior colleges) in passing efficiency (159.2) after completing 147 of 255 passes (.576) for 2,480 yards and 20 touchdowns with only six interceptions. For his two-year JC career, Bryant led CCSF to a 21-2 record and completed 272 of 458 passes (.594) and 4,599 yards and 47 touchdowns, with only 12 interceptions.
Tomich played in eight games for OSU last year as a backup to Tim Alexander and completed 38 of 93 passes for 540 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
