Beavers Beat Cougars in Instant Classic

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball defeated Washington State in its first match of Pac-12 play, taking the victory in five sets at Gill Coliseum.

Jackie Matias became the first Oregon State player to record 60-plus assists in nearly 15 years, finishing with 68 against the Cougars, which is the highest single match total since Tayla Woods was credited with 61 against Long Beach State on Sept. 20, 2013. A senior from Honolulu, Hawai'i, Matias ranks second in the conference for assists (418) and assists per set (10.20).

AC Froehlich tallied a match-high 27 kills, adding eight digs and three blocks, while Taylor Treahy contributed her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs. Taray Tela had a career-best 16 kills on .652 hitting to go along with four blocks, and Cheyenne Green notched a career-high 15 kills, her third double-digit performance this season.

Alana Marrs' five blocks led the Oregon State defense as she hit .294 on the way to six kills, while Isabel Bertelsen (16) and Yasemin Narlioglu (14) contributed double-digit digs; Bertelsen added eight assists while Narlioglu exceled from the service line with a pair of aces.

Beatrice Spada's three service aces led the team as OSU finished the match with nine. The Beavers also finished with 13 blocks, which was the team's second-highest single match total this season, and amassed 82 kills, which was also a season high mark.

After the Cougars took set one, 25-21, Oregon State dominated the second. A back-and-forth affair early, a Froehlich kill leveled the set and ignited a stretch of seven points in eight rallies, building a 16-11 lead. Though Washington State fought back and brought it within two, a 6-0 run paved the way for a 25-18 win.

WSU took the third, but it took extra points to get there. The Cougars built a lead as large as five points late in the set at 21-16, but the Beavers battled back thanks to a 4-0 run and two more Froehlich kills to tie it at 23 apiece. Though Oregon State was on set point after a Green kill put the team up 25-24, Washington State rattled off three straight to win 27-25.

Oregon State came out rolling early in the fourth, building a 6-2 lead, but the Cougars battled right back to tie it up at 11. Both teams continued to trade leads and ties, and a late 3-0 run capped off by a Froehlich and Marrs block put the Beavers ahead 20-17 before Bertelsen aced WSU on the way to a 25-20 set victory.

OSU won the fifth set 29-27 after 20 tied scores and six lead changes, which culminated in a combined 16 match points. Froehlich totaled seven kills, Matias added 16 kills and a Tela kill ignited a 3-0 run to finish the set and match.

Beaver volleyball remains home for its next two, hosting Texas State (Oct. 1, 6 p.m.) and Fresno State (Oct. 3, 1 p.m.) next week.
