August 30, 2024 | Men's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Oregon State men's soccer team dominated the scoring chances, but had to settle for a 1-1 road draw with Michigan Friday evening in Ann Arbor.
Ellis Spikner netted his second goal of the season, finding the net in the first half to even the score after the Wolverines struck in the opening minutes. The Beavers created numerous scoring chances throughout the evening, capped off by a Sergi Solans effort from close range with seven minutes to go that was just outside the post.
Overall, Oregon State held a 17-7 advantage in shots and forced five Michigan saves. The Beavers also took 12 corner kicks, compared to two for the Wolverines.
Michigan drew first blood, finding the net less than 10 minutes into the contest. Arnau Farnos forced a save with a shot from distance minutes later, as the Beavers looked for a quick equalizer.
Spikner evened things up in the 21st minute, slotting one past the keeper after Enzo Newman intercepted the pass of a Michigan defender inside the Wolverine 18-yard box. Oregon State continued to press forward in the latter phases of the first half, with Dante Williams and Pere Belmonte both having shots blocked in quick succession, but the teams headed to the break even at one apiece.
Fabian Straudi nearly put the Beavers in front early in the second half, as a beautiful piece of build-up play led to a scoring chance rounded out by the midfielder forcing a save from close range.
OSU continued to control the contest throughout the second half, with Newman and Williams putting shots on target in the 76th and 79th minute, respectively. Solans missed his opportunity from point-blank range with seven minutes to play, as the sides split the points.
Freshman John Nicolson recorded a pair of saves, as he made his Oregon State debut in goal.
The Beavers will remain on the road Monday for a matchup with Michigan State.
