Beavs Close Cliff Keen With Three Podium Finishers
December 07, 2024 | Wrestling
LAS VEGAS – The Oregon State wrestling team closed competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas on Saturday with a fifth-place finisher and a pair in sixth. As a team, the Beavers finished action with 35.0 points, ranking 13th in the field of 30.
Brett Mower (HWT) split a pair of ranked matchups on his way to the fifth-place finish on Saturday. He came back from an early 3-0 deficit to 29th-ranked Harley Andrews of Nebraska, turned it to a 5-3 win and used the buffer of the riding time bonus. The redshirt senior saw his day end early - before the fifth-place match was set to begin - due to an injury to his opponent after falling to Arizona State's Cohlton Schultz, a four-time defending All-American, in the consolation semifinal round.
Unable to clinch his second tournament title - following his win in Annapolis, Md. at last month's Navy Classic - in as many chances this season, ninth-ranked Trey Munoz (197) exited the invitational due to injury. He finished the event in fifth place.
Twenty-fourth-ranked Maximo Renteria (125) finished his first Cliff Keen Invitational with Oregon State with a sixth-place finish. He fell to a pair of ranked foes – no. 4 Troy Spratley of Oklahoma State and 10th-ranked Brendan McCrone of Ohio State – on Saturday to close competition.
For the second consecutive year, the Beavers had multiple podium finishers at the Cliff Keen Invitational.
Oregon State will return to action on December 20th with a dual at Utah Valley, their third consecutive against a Big 12 opponent. Action from Orem, Utah is set for a 6 p.m. PT start and can be seen on FloWrestling.
