
Beavers Open Weekend with Five New Records

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State Track and Field team finished day one in Reno with two first-place finishes and five Beavers earning spots in the OSU history books.

In her Oregon State debut, Jayla Hooper, opened the day by setting a new school record in weight throw. The transfer from Stephen F. Austin State University threw a distance of 19.19m/62-115, earning the first-place spot on the podium for the day. Hooper improved the previous record that was set in 2019 by more than seven feet. Markayla Billings competed for her own record, earning #9 in OSU records. Billings posted a new personal best of 15.23m/49-11/75, finishing 10th overall.

Leading the team in the high jump, Dede Norman won it all with a jump of 1.78m/5-10. Just shy of her personal best, this puts the sophomore at #6 in school records. Lexi Hunt and Grace Proudfoot tied for fifth place, jumping 1.70m/5-7. This earns Proudfoot a new personal best.

Making their collegiate debuts, Megan Hatcher and Addison Swartzendruber represented the Beavers in the 400m. Hatcher finished in third with a time of 56.07, making her third in OSU records. Close behind, Swartzendruber finished in 56.60 to earn fourth place and cinched the fourth-best spot in OSU records.

In the 800m race, Ava McKee raced for fifth place with a time of 2:19.61, shaving over three seconds from her previous personal best. Sydney Van Der Zee raced to earn 13th with a time of 2:30.12.

Racing in the 200, Jada Hurley posted an 11th place finish for the Beavers, finishing in 24.86. Mersayis Shedd posted a time of 26.62 for 46th.

The competition resumes tomorrow for the Beavers. The distance squad will start the Danville Indoor Opener in Boston with the mile at 7:30 a.m. PST. The action in Reno continues with 60m hurdles at 10:00 a.m. PST.
