January 06, 2024 | Women's Gymnastics
LAS VEGAS – The Oregon State gymnastics team had a strong start to its season in the third session of the two-day Mean Girls Super 16 Championships on Saturday afternoon at Orleans Arena.
The Beavers, ranked No. 13 nationally in the preseason Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) poll, posted a 196.525 in their season opener and defeated No. 24 Southern Utah (196.025) and No. 31 BYU (195.900) but fell to No. 18 Minnesota (196.850).
Jade Carey took the beam title with a 9.975, while Jennifer McMillan finished in a tie for second on the beam after equaling her best career score with a 9.950. Kaitlin Garcia and Ellie Weaver each had career-best scores on the floor with a 9.875 and shared the title with two gymnasts from Minnesota.
Oregon State opened its season on the vault and scored a 48.950. Two newcomers, true freshman Sophia Esposito and transfer Sage Thompson, both began their Beaver careers in spectacular fashion with a team-best 9.850. Kaitlin Garcia and Sydney Gonzalez each posted a 9.775 and true freshman Olivia Buckner contributed the final score with a 9.700
The Beavers moved to the bars for the second rotation and scored a 49.625, the best in the session. Carey made her season debut and performed as one would expect with a 9.975. McMcMillan added a 9.950, equaling a career best score that she set last season when Oregon State defeated Utah to clinch a share of the 2023 Pac-12 Regular Season Championship. Another true freshman, Taylor DeVries, made her Oregon State debut in the No. 3 spot and showed no nerves to equal Natalie Briones and Thompson with a 9.900.
The third rotation had Oregon State on the beam where it scored a 48.725. Carey posted a team-best 9.900, while Gonzales had a 9.850, and Ariana Young and Esposito both finished with a 9.825. The team had to count one of two falls that kept it from a better score on the event.
In the final rotation of the meet, the Beavers took to the floor and scored a session-best 49.225. Garcia and Weaver both scored a 9.875 to share the event title with Gianna Gerdes and Mya Hooten of Minnesota.
