September 24, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team controlled the majority of the match, but fell to LMU 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field.
The Beavers held the majority of the possession in both halves, and out-shot the Lions 20-4 in the contest. Oregon State also took eight corner kicks, compared to two for LMU.
LMU opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, as a long ball over the top unlocked the Beavers' defense. The Beavers looked to answer quickly, as Dante Williams and Ellis Spikner both had scoring chances in quick succession.
Pere Belmonte came up with a vital tackle in the Oregon State penalty area, as he hustled back to make a sliding challenge on an LMU breakaway. Williams nearly evened things up the 20th, when his header was just wide of the target.
Spikner came close to capitalizing on a on a scramble on the box in the 22nd minute, but his sliding shot was just outside the post. Williams had another scoring chance in the 27th, but his shot was just off target.
Spikner was off target with a rocket from the right side of the box in the 43rd minute. It looked like the Beavers might even the score before the break, when the team earned a penalty kick, but the shot was saved and the Lions headed to the intermission up 1-0.
OSU continued to dominate the run of play early in the second half, but it was the Lions that found the net, as LMU scored its second goal in the 62nd minute on just its third shot of the contest.
Logan Farrington looked like he might pull one back in the 69th, as his shot from six yards out hit the crossbar and the post before it was cleared off the line. The Beavers continued to press forward down the stretch, but couldn't get on the score sheet, as LMU took the win.
Oregon State celebrated Senior Day in a postgame ceremony, as the team honored David Alino, Vicho Castro, Logan Farrington, Turner Humphrey, Jacob Huth, Zach Lame and Ellis Spikner.
The Beavers will hit the road next week, as they head to Seattle for a matchup with Washington.
