June 22, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State gymnastics added All-American transfer Sage Thompson to complete the 2024 signing class as announced by head coach Tanya Chaplin on Thursday afternoon.
"I'm excited to share that Sage has joined our program," head coach Tanya Chaplin said on the addition of Thompson. "With her impressive championship experience, Sage will make a significant impact on our lineup right away. Not only is she an exquisite gymnast, but she is also an exceptional person. We are thrilled to have her as part of our team and look forward to her contributions over the next two season as she calls Oregon State her home."
Thompson spent the past two seasons at Utah competing primarily on bars for the Utes, with six appearances on vault. She compiled 14 scores of 9.9 or better across her two years, including a perfect 10 in a dual meet with Minnesota during the 2022 season to guide the program to a record 49.800 on the apparatus.
"I am so excited for the opportunities that lie ahead at Oregon State," Thompson said. "I'm thankful to be able to join such an amazing team with incredible people."
Last season, Thompson scored her season-high of 9.95 on bars at Gill Coliseum for the first event title of her sophomore season, while matching the score during the second round of the Los Angeles NCAA Regional. The Lehi, Utah native scored a 9.85 or better on bars nine times over the course of the year, including six in a row to end the season. In her lone appearance on vault, Thompson added a 9.825 against Arizona State.
During her freshman campaign, she earned second team NCAA All-American honors with a 9.900 at the 2022 NCAA Semifinals and followed with a 9.9125 in the finals. Thompson earned first team All-Pac-12 honors with a 9.90 or better in half of her bar routines, including both routines at the NCAA Championships. Her first career event title came against Oklahoma with a 9.925 on bars, earning Thompson Pac-12 Specialist of the Week for her first league award.
Prior to beginning her collegiate career, Thompson was a three-time Junior Olympic National Championships qualifier (2017-2019), before having her JO and club career cut short due to COVID-19 and injury.
At the 2019 J.O. Championships, Thompson earned a share of the gold medal on bars and finished tied for sixth in the all-around (Sr. A) earning herself a position on the 2019 J.O. National Team.
The year prior, Thompson placed second on bars and fifth on vault (Jr. E). Thompson proved herself once again nationally on her signature event – the uneven bars – when she earned the silver medal at the 2019 Nastia Liukin Cup.
Dating back to the 2017 Region 1 Championships, Thompson picked up seven gold medals, including winning three-straight all-around titles as a Level 10 gymnast.
In 2019, Thompson won the gold medal on beam to go with her all-around title, as well as finishing second on bars, third on floor and fifth on vault.
Thompson was just as dominant at the regional level in 2018 when she earned gold medals in the all-around and on bars and beam, while taking home the silver medal on vault. She also finished fourth on floor. She was the 2017 Region 1 champion on floor and the all-around, silver medalist on bars, and bronze medalist on vault.
Over the course of her club career, Thompson totaled 15 first-place finishes and 10 runner-up finishes at the Utah State Championships. At the 2019 Utah State Championships, Thompson nearly swept the competition, taking home the all-around, vault, bars and floor gold medals, while earning the silver medal on beam. She was just as convincing the year prior after winning the all-around, vault and floor titles. She finished as the silver medalist on bars and beam to round out the meet. In 2017, Thompson won the all-around and vault title, and finished second on bars and beam.
Thompson joins signees Olivia Buckner, Taylor DeVries, Mia Heather and Sophia Esposito to round out the roster additions for the GymBeavs.
