Fetherstonhaugh Becomes First Pac-12 Champion from Oregon State
May 13, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
WALNUT, Calif. – It was a day years in the making for Oregon State.
Grace Fetherstonhaugh became OSU's first women's Pac-12 Champion, pulling away from Washington's Kayley Delay in the final 1,000 meters of the steeplechase and outracing teammate Kaylee Mitchell in the last lap. The Beavs' dynamic duo went 1-2, securing 18 points for Oregon State in one event.
The steeplechase performance helped Oregon State close the day with 31 points, one off the best total in school history with a full day of finals to come. The Beavers sat in fifth place after Saturday's action, which would also be the best performance in school history.
"Words are hard right now. I'm so excited to finally see an Oregon State athlete finish first at this meet. Grace and Kaylee were such brilliant competitors today. They knew Delay from Washington was the NCAA runner up last year - they didn't take her for granted. Grace was incredible over the last kilometer - just super special to see her get the W," Oregon State head coach Louie Quintana said.
"I'm thrilled for Anneke Moersdorf. She is going beyond for this team this weekend. She had a school record in the heptathlon - a mark that is very much in contention to make the NCAAs - and she came back literally 30 min after running a two-second 800m PR in the hep and somehow jumped over six meters to score in the long jump. Incredible," Quintana continued. "If it was not for Anneke's 6.18m school record in the long jump of the heptathlon today, we'd be talking about Delaney being the new record holder. She was awesome getting a big 6th for the team today. We are at 31 points with a bunch of opportunities tomorrow. This is pretty fun stuff."
TODAY'S FINALS
Fetherstonhaugh and Mitchell's big day highlighted the finals with their combined 18 points. Fetherstonhaugh's 9:39.23 would have ranked no. 1 in the nation at the beginning of the day. It is the third-fastest time at a Pac-12 Championship and Mitchell's 9:45.21 is fifth-fastest.
Were it not for Fetherstonhaugh and Mitchell, Anneke Moersdorf would have been the story of the day for the Beavs. Moersdorf broke two school records and scored in both the heptathlon and high jump in the same day.
The junior began the day with a school record of 5618 points in the heptathlon. Moersdorf's PRs in javelin and the 800 meters, along with setting a school long jump record (6.17m/20-3) on day two placed her fifth overall in the heptathlon, giving Oregon State four points. She then turned around and recorded a 6.05m/19-10.5 long jump 30 minutes later to earn eight and secure another crucial points.
Delaney Bahn picked up three more points for the Beavs in the long jump. Bahn moved into OSU's number two spot all-time in the long jump and placed sixth with a 6.14m/20-1.75.
UP NEXT
Oregon State will have the opportunity to score in a total of eight different events on the final day tomorrow starting with the 4x100 meter relay at 1:10 p.m. and closing with the 4x400 meter relay.
