May 01, 2023 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Nate Engel, the associate wrestling coach for Oregon State, was named the 2022 USA Wrestling Women's Freestyle Coach of the Year, the organization announced.
The honor from USA Wrestling is his third following the 2021 Women's Coach of the Year nod and the 2019 Greco Roman Coach of the Year award.
Top names in the sport of women's wrestling including Adeline Gray and Mallory Velte have received guidance from Engel. Gray was a silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a five-time world champion at 76 kilograms. Velte won a pair of bronze medals at the World Championships in 2018 and 2022.
Engel has been a part of three committees for the organization: Greco-Roman Sport, Women's Sport and Governance.
He also led the U.S. Junior Greco-Roman world squad at the 2018 Junior World Championships in Slovakia.
Locally, Engel extensively works with wrestlers through the Beaver Dam Regional Training Center. Ten student-athletes competed in the 2022 US Open in Las Vegas last weekend worked with the Beaver Dam RTC.
Engel just completed his third season with the Beavers in 2022-23, where he helped lead the Beavers to its 24th Pac-12 team championship that saw five take individual titles. In his time in Corvallis, Engel has mentored five All-Americans, 21 qualifiers to the NCAA Championships and eight individual conference champions.
