Beavers Battle Conditions for Encouraging Day in Monmouth
April 07, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Oregon State battled the wind and cold to pick up nine wins with several encouraging performances by Beaver freshmen in a successful trip north on Friday afternoon.
Â
OSU freshmen raced to three of the victories and provided three legs of the 4x400 meter relay win that closed the day on the track. Beaver frosh also showed plenty of growth with nine personal bests.
Â
"I thought we were going endured tough cold and very windy conditions to take another step, especially a lot of the younger athletes," said head coach Louie Quintana. "Jillian was tenacious is the 800, she's going to run sub 2:10 in better conditions. Ava Gross had a nice sprint double that she can really build off and so did Kylee Nelson"
Â
A pair of upperclassmen started the day on top with Keely McLaughlin (52.77m/173-1) and Markayla Billings (52.70m/172-10) going 1-2 in the hammer throw. It was the beginning of a marathon day for McLaughlin, who placed second in the discus (45.05m/147-09) and added a win in the shot put (14.71m/48-3.25).
Â
Chelsea Howard picked up Oregon State's second win of the meet, leaping through the wind to a career-best 5.70m/18-08.50.
Â
"I felt the athlete of the meet was Chelsea Howard," Quintana said. "She had a great long jump competition in cold conditions, jumping 5.70m twice. Really pleased to see her coming into her own."
Â
The Beavs then picked up action on the track, which began with Ava Gross earning a win in her second collegiate 400m. The freshman finished in 58.61, leading a cohort of four first-year runners in the top six. Gross also placed second in the 200.
Â
Jillian Brown picked up the day's next victory, recording a PR of 2:14.81 for the win in the 800 meters. Kylee Nelson added a win with a PB of 1:04.37 in the 400 hurdles.
Â
A group consisting primarily of distance runners closed the day with a victory in the 4x400 relay. Brown, Ellie Quintana, Jamie Hamlin and Aleen Golla each contributed legs to the triumph.
