Oregon State Advances In Thriller
November 16, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore.- Oregon State's Fran Cortijo put away a Logan Farrington pass in the first round of overtime to give the Beavers a 2-1 victory over Seattle U in an instant classic on Thursday night.
Â
Cortijo's goal came in the 92nd minute of a contest where the Beavs dominated the possession and took 23 shots to the Redhawks three.
Â
The sophomore scored the match-winner off a pass from Farrington on the right wing, keyed by a savvy dummy from Dante Williams in the middle of the field to distract the defense and set the stage for Cortijo.
Â
The Beavers applied all the early pressure, taking 11 first half shots to none for the visitors. Logan Farrington had two chaces at a score with one inching above the crossbar and another being saved off a free kick.
Â
OSU broke through in the 31st minute. Enzo Newman put his defender on skates in the penalty area and used the space he created to find Dante Williams streaking through the box. Williams finished the opportunity to put the Beavers on the board. Â
Â
Seattle U equalized after the break. The Rehawks took advantage of a bit of chaos following a corner kick and Mo Mohamed slid a goal through a mess of players in front while Luis Castillo was screened out.
Â
The Beavs regained the front foot in the match with two near-misses from Williams. On the first, a pass from Fran Cortijo just slid past the junior midfielder and his second attempt – a breakaway - was stymied by Seattle U keeper Charlie Lanphier.
Â
The unfulfilled chances, along with a save by Castillo, sent the game to overtime and set the stage for a late winner from OSU.
Â
Up next, the Beavers advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, hitting the road to Portland on Sunday at 5 p.m.
