Beavers set two more school records on Day 3 at Hayward Field
Eugene, Ore. – Kaylee Mitchell concluded an outstanding weekend for the Oregon State women's track & field team on Sunday by taking fifth place in the 5000 meters on the final day of the Pacific-12 Conference Championships at Hayward Field.
A junior from Sprague High School in Salem, Mitchell finished in 15:59.70, improving her No. 2 all-time mark by less than a second. Her former PR was 16:00.52, at Hayward Field in 2021.
Mitchell scored four points, giving her 12 for the meet. She took second place in the steeplechase on Saturday and returned less than 24 hours later with another impressive performance.
Sunday also concluded an outstanding 2021-22 in conference championships. Mitchell placed sixth at the Pac-12 cross country meet at Salt Lake City, the best finish in school history.
The Beavers scored eight points on Sunday and finished in 10th place with 32 points, a school record in a conference meet since the sport was reinstated from a 17-year hiatus for the 2005 season. Their previous best was 23.5 points, at Seattle in 2016.
"I'm immensely proud of this team and coaching staff," head coach Louie Quintana said. "We are continually breaking records and getting better. This weekend we finally broke the 30-point barrier and shattered our point total record score for the Pac-12 meet, and we did it across multiple event disciplines.
"We had some outstanding performances from several individuals. Anneke Moersdorf was fantastic, scoring the long jump and triple jump. Kaylee also was great as a multiple scorer in the steeple and 5k.
"We had so many people really battle to score, from Emma Nelson in the high jump and Grace Fetherstonhaugh in the steeple to our javelin crew," of Isabelle Esler, Jordynn Slater and Ella Knott, who each placed on Friday. "It was a fun weekend to be a Beav."
Senior Emma Nelson and junior Anneke Moersdorf placed seventh in their respective events, scoring two points apiece.
Moersdorf broke her own school and scored two team points by taking seventh in the triple jump in 40-9.50. She fell just short of a pre-meet goal of breaking the 41-foot barrier, but her performance bettered her old record of 40-8.25 by more than an inch.
She established two school records at the championships. On Friday she took fourth and matched a 39-year-old standard in the long jump with a 20-1 mark. She scored seven points overall.
Nelson cleared 5-7.25 in the high jump and took seventh place, good for two points. She was eliminated after missing three times at 5-9.25.
The Beavers closed the meet with the 1600 relay foursome of Paige Sefried, Adael Scatena, Jada Hurley and Mari Friedman setting a school record of 3:44.72. They did not score, but the easily smashed the former standard of 3:47.40, which had stood since 1980.
Friedman took 10th in the 1500 in 4:21.92. Freshman Jade Whitfield placed 19th in the discus at 148-4, the top throw of the four OSU competitors.
The Beavers began the afternoon on the track by taking 10th in the 400 relay in 46.98. It was the seventh-fastest time in school history; team members were Abby Buckley, Moersdorf, Chelsea Howard and Jada Hurley.
All told the Beavers set or tied school records in the long jump, triple jump and 1600 relay, and posted all-time top-10 marks in the 400 relay, the 5000 and the 200.
