Beavers Have Impressive Showing At Competitive PING/ASU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Danique Stokmans and Kelsey Webster both recorded Top 15 finishes, Chayse Gomez tied her career-best score in the final round and the Oregon State women's golf team had a very impressive showing at the competitive PING/ASU Invitational, which concluded on Sunday.

The 37th-ranked Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament in seventh place after posting a 2-over 294-285-287--866 at the par-72, 6,426-yard Papago Golf Course.

After shooting a 6-over 294 in the first round, Oregon State posted back-to-back sub-par scores to finish one of the toughest events in the country with a great placing that will move it up the national rankings.

The field featured 12 of the 16 teams ranked among the Top 50 nationally by Golfstat.com. The Beavers finished ahead of two Top 10 teams -- No. 7 Virginia (17-over 881) and No. 10 Michigan (23-over 887) -- and ahead of three Pac-12 teams -- No. 25 Arizona (18-over 882), Colorado (33-over 897) and No. 40 Washington (42-over 906).

Stokmans continued her hot play, finishing in a tie for 15th place with a 1-under 74-70-71--215. She had eight birdies in the tournament and only one score above a bogey in the 54 holes. Her 40 pars were the fourth most among the 84 players in the field.

In three of the last four tournaments, Stokmans has finished in fifth place (Pac-12 Preview), tied for eighth place (Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational) and tied for 15th place (PING/ASU Invitational).

Webster also finished in a tie for 15th place with a 1-under 70-72-73--215. The 1-under 215 is her best career three-round score. Her previous best three-round score was a 1-over 214 at the Stanford Collegiate this past fall.

It's Webster's third Top 20 finish in five tournaments with Oregon State this season. She finished in a tie for 11th place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational and a tie for 19th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Gomez was sensational in the final round, tying her career-best score with a 3-under 69 that included five birdies. After opening the tourney with a 4-over 76, she responded with scores of 72-69 to finish in a tie for 24th place with a 1-over 76-72-69--217.

Gomez first carded a 3-under 69 in the first round of the Wildcat Invitational last spring. Her best career finish is a tie for 12th place at the opening tournament of the spring season, the Florida State Match-Up in Tallahassee.

Ellie Slama fired a 1-under 71 in the second round that was sandwiched by a pair of 2-over 74's and finished the event in a tie for 33rd place with a 3-over 74-71-74--219. She had eight birdies and one eagle through the three rounds.

Amanda Minni finished in a tie for 77th place with a 19-over 78-76-81--235.

Arizona State (25-under 839) took advantage of playing on its home course and won the team title by 15 strokes over second place Oregon (10-under 854). The Sun Devils' Alexandra Fosterling claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 207.

The Beavers will next compete in their final regular-season tournament, the Silverado Showdown, which is scheduled for Monday, April 4 through Wednesday, April 6 in Napa, Calif.

The Pac-12 Championship will take place in Eugene, Ore., from Monday, April 18 to Wednesday, April 20. Admission is free all three days.
