Beavs Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At Arizona State
October 28, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Taking the first set of the match, Oregon State was unable to sustain the momentum, falling in four sets (25-20, 20-25, 15-25, 15-25) on Friday night at Desert Financial Arena.
Izzi Szulczewski recorded another double-double, leading the Beavs 14 digs and 11 kills on the night, while Mychael Vernon joined her in double figures offensively with 10 kills of her own. Setter Inna Balyko finished with 40 assists.
Defensively for the Beavers (7-14, 2-9 Pac-12), libero Ryan White led the charge with 15 digs. Emma Villaluz joined Szulczewski and White with 11 digs for her sixth match in double figures this season.
Freshman Kinley Swan continued an impressive freshman campaign with seven kills and just one error, as the Orem, Utah product is now just one kill away from 100 in her first season with the program.
Service errors on both sides kept the match tight at 10-10 in the early going of the opening set. Back-to-back kills from freshman Kinley Swan gave the Beavs a two-point advantage at the media timeout. OSU kept pushing out of the break, forcing Arizona State (11-12, 5-6 Pac-12) into a pair of errors, to take a 17-13 lead, pressing the Sun Devils into their first timeout. Balyko found holes in the ASU defense early on, using the dump set to collect three kills, while dishing out 11 assists in the opening stanza to guide the Beavers to a 25-20 victory in set one.
A highly contested start to the second set saw neither team lead by more than two points, until a kill by Iman Isanovic gave the Sun Devils a 15-12 edge at the television break. Another big swing from Szulczewski drew the Beavs back within a point at 19-18, however the Orange and Black could not get over the hump, as Arizona State closed strong to tie the match with a 25-20 win in the second frame.
The Sun Devils sprinted out to a five-point advantage behind a pair of quick 4-0 runs to force OSU into a timeout trailing 12-7 in the third. ASU made just one attack error in set three to keep the Beavs at an arm's length and take a 25-15 triumph to push ahead 2-1 in the match.
The Beavs again found themselves in an early hole with Arizona State using a 7-3 run behind a pair of service aces to start set four. A final 7-0 push was all the Sun Devils needed to finish the Beavers, taking set four and the match, 25-15.
Oregon State returns to action on Sunday against Arizona. First serve from Tucson is set for 12 p.m. PT.
