Fetherstonhaugh Withdraws From 3,000M Steeplechase National Championships
June 10, 2021 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Redshirt sophomore Grace Fetherstonhaugh withdrew from the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2021 NCAA Track and Field National Championships due to non-COVID-19 related illness.
Â
Fetherstonhaugh was scheduled to run at 4:02 pm (PT) in the semifinals today.
Â
"I am really bummed for Grace (Fetherstonhaugh)," said head coach Louie Quintana. "She's worked hard for this moment and its bad timing to get sick now. She's such a fighter and has tried to rally the last couple days, but we came to the conclusion that she would not be able to have the energy necessary to give it her best shot today. She's just a sophomore and had an amazing breakout year. She will be back, better and stronger."
Â
In what was a historic season for Fetherstonhaugh who qualified for the National Championships with the second-fastest time in school history of 9:50.40 to finish seventh at the NCAA West Regionals.
Â
During a shortened indoor track and field season, she ran a new school record of 16:00.90 in the 5K at the Iowa State Classic.
Â
The New Westminster, British Columbia native, is just the third athlete in program history to qualify for the Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in the same season after earning Second-Team All-American honors in the 5K with a 14th-place finish in March.
Â
Carina Westover competed in the high jump in the Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in 1984, while Laura Carlyle took part in the mile run at the Indoor Championships and the 1,500M in the Outdoor Championships in 2012.
