Thiam scores third of season

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 3 Oregon State men's soccer team battled hard, but fell 2-1 to No. 4 Washington Wednesday evening at Lorenz Field in Corvallis.

"Obviously we are disappointed with the result," said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. "With as talented as this group is, you expect to get a result every time you step on the field, even against the top teams in the nation like Washington. We started slow today. The response was good – we could have hung our head after going down 2-0. We created enough chances to take the game, but we didn't."

Mouhameth Thiam found the net for the Beavers in the match, scoring his third of the season. Tsiki Ntsabeleng and Tyrone Mondi notched assists on the goal.

Oregon State had multiple chances to level the score in the second half, but failed to convert, as it dropped points at home for the first time this season. The Beavers now sit at 7-2 on the year, 4-2 in Pac-12 play.

The Beavers nearly netted an early goal, as Joel Walker curled a shot just outside the post two minutes into the contest. Washington opened the scoring in the 10^th minute, finding the net on a scramble in the box following a corner kick. The Huskies added another in the 21^st.

It looked like Oregon State might pull one back in the 23^rd, when Adrian Crespo played a nice cross to the back post that narrowly missed the head of Walker. Thiam got the Beavers on the scoreboard in the 27^th, converting from a tight angle after Mondi played him down the left side of the box.

Ntsabeleng forced a save from the right side of the box in the 33^rd. The Huskies headed to the break in front 2-1.

Mondi nearly leveled things right at the start of the second half, as he took aim from a tight angle less than 20 seconds into the second period. The midfielder had another chance in the 62^nd minute, but again the Husky keeper was up to the challenge.

Walker found himself in on goal in the 67^th, but the Washington goalie came up with another stop. Oregon State continued to press forward in the closing portion of the match, but was unable to even the score as the Huskies took the victory.

Oregon State will be back in action Sunday when the Beavers head to the Bay Area for a matchup with California.
