Quarantine Q & A with Colette Yamaoka
June 15, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
Our gymnastics quarantine series continues with a Q & A with rising senior Colette Yamaoka.
Q: Where are you quarantining?
A: I am quarantining at home in Northern California.
Q: What is the biggest positive to come from your quarantine?
A: The quarantine gave me a lot of free time to really focus on myself and school. It also gave me a greater appreciate for the little things that I often take for granted.
Q: What is your preferred work out location during quarantine?
A: I have a pretty good gym setup in my garage, so I work out there most mornings.
Q: Abs or cardio?
A: I wish I could say both, however that would be a lie because cardio is definitely something I don't enjoy. So abs over cardio.
Q: What TV series have you enjoyed the most during the quarantine?
A: I recently watched the series 'Hollywood' on Netflix and that was pretty good. I mostly watch a lot of documentaries and crime shows which is normally something NIya and I do together.
Q: What have you done during the quarantine that you didn't do during normal life?
A: I've really enjoyed finding other ways to stay active. Obviously gymnastics requires a high level of fitness so trying to find what works best for me to stay in shape has been fun. I've been doing more Crossfit style workouts and I'm starting to do yoga a couple times a week.
Q: Have you done anything to improve yourself during quarantine?
A: I've been able to take more time to learn about nutrition and how to fuel my body properly so I can feel my best both physically and mentally. I'm also going to be a senior next year so I have been improving my "adulting" skills so I'm ready for life after college.
Q: What was your favorite moment from the 2020 gymnastics season?
A: My favorite moment was the meet at Arizona. We were off to a bit of a slow start at the beginning of the season, but at that meet we hit 24-for-24 for the first time and it was the turning point in the season where we started to climb in the right direction. Everyone came back from that meet with a new fire and we kept building every meet after that.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: I'm planning to go to PA school after I graduate to become a physician's assistant.
Q: Is there a skill you're looking forward to learning during the offseason?
A: Last year I was training a full-in so I could upgrade my bars dismount and it would be cool if I could start training that again.
Q: How is remote college working out? What has been your biggest school challenge?
A: Ahhh. Remote college was definitely difficult for me. Most of my classes had lab components since I'm a biology major. So having to take those online instead of in person was really different from what I'm used to. I obviously didn't have access to the same materials as in the lab so it wasn't the same hands-on learning. But my professors did a really great job of transitioning those labs to remote delivery and I really appreciate that.
Q: What do you look forward to the most about getting back to Corvallis (or other people getting back to Corvallis?
A: I'm looking forward to being able to hang out with my teammates again in and out of the gym! They are so fun and crazy and I miss them all so much!
