Voices: Hear from OSU Student-Athletes
March 24, 2020 | General
In unprecedented times, hear from our student-athletes on how they are handling the situation.
Hear from Oregon State student-athletes on their thoughts and feelings as the COVID-19 outbreak has changed the landscape of college sports this spring.
Kyler McMahan, Baseball
"It's been important to stay on top of school and with the news that our season is over I have worked hard to get school work done. To stay sharp, I've been taking time off my arm and focusing on hitting and lifting. I am getting as many quality reps off the fastball and curveball machines as possible."
Grace Massey, Volleyball
"Most of my time has been spent studying. I obviously don't have the same resources to work out as I did before, but I'm trying to eat healthy and stay very hydrated. I'm also trying to get outside and go for runs and walks around Corvallis."
Joel Walker, Men's Soccer
"These are interesting times, for sure. Nothing that any of us have ever experienced before. The past couple of days I've had to some serious heart checks regarding my purpose. During this time, it is important to do our part and focus on the bright side. I wake up, I read and pray for a bit. Thanks to our trainer Lindsey, I have a nice at home workout that I do in the morning and late afternoon. I've been watching A LOT of movies and doing A LOT of cleaning. Guys on the squad are all working out in their own way and it's good for us."
Savanna Force, Gymnastics
"Obviously there is not much to do as so many businesses are closed, so I have been doing at home workouts that our strength coach, sent in order to stay in shape and have something to do. This is definitely a strange time however, it's important to acknowledge the severity of the situation and do everything we can to stay healthy so that as soon as we get back we can jump right back in to doing what we love."
Mariah Mazon, Softball
"With the events unfolding in our world and the sudden cancelation of my junior season, things have been very heartbreaking. I have been thinking of why we are all going through this, then I stop and remind myself that God has a plan. Maybe we all needed time away from sports, school and work to just relax and take care of ourselves. To stay emotionally and mentally healthy I have been painting, praying, cleaning, meditating and spending time with friends. To stay physically healthy, I have been using home "equipment" like laundry detergent for kettle bell swings, wearing a backpack for squats and using a couch for inclined pushups. These are just a few things my roommates and I are doing to stay safe and positive during these difficult times.

Bridgette Skiba, Women's Soccer
"I know right now it's hard to find motivation, especially because we don't know the next time that we will be competing in our sports. Right now however, I take each day one at a time. I feel blessed that I can still go on runs, and do at home workouts that Izzy, our lovely strength coach, provided for us. Now is a time to reflect and be grateful for what we do have in life, and make sure that we are taking care of one another. Try using this time to express that there's hope. Be the motivation to help others keep going, because we can impact people by more than competing in our sport."
Zach Reichle, Men's Basketball
"Getting some rest after the end of our season, but also trying to stay in shape at the same time. Right now I am just doing in-home workouts, shooting on our hoop and going on lots of hikes. It's a tough time for everyone right now, but I know we will get through it."

Ethan Thompson, Men's Basketball
"Since I have been staying inside, I've been sticking to pushups and sit-ups and using some dumbbells that I have in my living room. Hope everyone is staying safe and finding a way to stay active. Go Beavs!"
