The Shot with Karl Maasdam
March 23, 2020 | General
Go behind the scenes of some of the greatest photographs in Oregon State Athletics history.

A 1992 graduate of Oregon State, Karl Maasdam has been shooting the Beavers for over 30 years. As a student for the Daily Barometer, he took his first photo from the sideline in 1987. From behind his lens, he has seen and captured some of the greatest moments in Oregon State Athletics history. We asked him to pick his 10 favorite photos, and explain the photo, why it matters, and how he got "The Shot." We'll be adding one photo per week through spring.

Feb 24, 2016 - Stevie for the win
"Last-second shot's are stressful. I have to get the shot, so I always start making my plan with a minute or so to go in the game. I usually like to be on the opposite side of the court from where the Beavers will be shooting. This gives me a much better chance of getting a clear view of the shot. This shot is far from perfect, I wish I would have framed it better to show more of the right side of the court, but I love the crowd, the ball on the fingertips and the drama."

Sept 22, 2017 - Men's Soccer beautiful sky
"When the sun sets and the sky turns purple I stop what I'm doing and try to get action and sky in one photo. It is not as easy as it sounds. Sometimes I go high and shoot down on the field, at Reser this works great, here I decided to put the camera on the ground and shoot up and just wait for the action to come to me."

June 28th, 2018 - World Series Trophy Locker Room
"I have over 34,000 photos I took over the 15 days in Omaha in 2018, and this is my favorite. Kyle Nobach hoisting the trophy in the locker room and letting out a yell."

Oct. 26th, 2017 - Fred Lauina catch and run, OSU vs Stanford Watch the Play
"When a lineman catches a pass on a trick play and rumbles down the sideline towards the endzone, I have to have a photo. Lucky for me I was in the right place for Fred Lauina's catch against Stanford in 2017. Still my most liked photo on Instagram."

March 28th, 2016 - OSU Heads to the Final Four - Recap | Box Score
"This was shot after the Beavers beat Baylor to advance to the Final Four. The big three were heading to the press room after cutting down the nets. Sydney jumps into Ruth's arms and Jamie seeing me starting to take photo runs up raises the trophy. I love how this photo sums up that year, the three players, and everything the Women's Basketball program is about."
