Yamaoka Earns Pac-12 Coaches’ Choice Award
March 11, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – OSU junior Colette Yamaoka has been named as the Pac-12 Gymnastics Coaches' Choice of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The conference coaches nominate and vote on this award, which was started by the coaches this season, and is given to a student-athlete for her strong performance and impact on her team.
Yamaoka, a junior, was an unheralded gymnast coming out of San Benito High where she trained at USA Sports in Hollister, Calif. Shortly after arriving on campus in Corvallis, she reached out to the Beavers' coaching staff to see about a spot on the team. With a need on the uneven bars and Yamaoka being a bars specialist a match was made and following a tryout she was added to the team.
She served as the team's primary alternate throughout her freshman season in 2018. She earned her first shot in the competition lineup early in the 2019 season and has been a fixture in the leadoff spot ever since. Yamaoka has had a steadying influence on the bars lineup for the last two years hitting 22 out of the 23 routines she's competed during her career. In addition, she has shown a knack for raising her game when the stakes are the highest posting what was then her career-high of a 9.80 at Pac-12 Championships and again in the second round of NCAA Regionals before resetting her personal-mark to 9.8125 at NCAA Championships.
