
Beavers Best Bears in Season Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's basketball team opened the 2020-21 season with a 71-63 win in a nonconference matchup with California Wednesday evening at Gill Coliseum.

Junior Warith Alatishe put up 16 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting in his Oregon State debut. The forward finished two points short of the Beaver record for junior points in a debut. Senior Ethan Thompson recorded 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while fellow senior Zach Reichle tallied 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor.

Maurice Calloo came up with eight points and four rebounds in his first game as a Beaver. Jarod Lucas went for 11 points, sinking all seven of his free throw attempts.

As a team, Oregon State shot 44.8 percent from the floor, compared to 39.7 percent for California. The Beavers out-rebounded the Golden Bears 43-32.

The teams went back-and-forth early on, as Oregon State took a 16-13 lead at the mid-way point of the first half. The Beavers exploded for 9-0 run during the late stages of the opening period to go in front 27-20, prompting a California timeout.

OSU took a 36-31 advantage into the break. Alatishe put up 10 points in the first half on 5-for-7 shooting.

The Beavers extended the lead to double-figures at the first media timeout of the second half, sparked by seven points from Thompson in the opening minutes of the frame.

Oregon State went ahead by as many as 14, before taking the victory by eight.

Oregon State will face Northwest Friday morning at 10 a.m., also at Gill Coliseum.
