Why did you choose Oregon State and what are you most looking forward to?
I chose Oregon State because I loved the passion that the whole team had for each other and running. I loved the competitive spirit on the team especially because I could tell everyone truly liked everyone else and wanted them to succeed as much as they wanted to succeed individually. I am most looking forward to seeing all of our hard work pay off because I know that we can really surprise people and be one of the top teams in the nation.
What is your primary reason for running?
My main reason for running is because I love the simplicity in it. You get what you put in and there's no faking it in this sport or being carried by a team. So, when you get a PR, do well in a race or have a really good workout, it's because you worked for it. It's just a very satisfying feeling that becomes addicting. I really enjoy all the friendships that I've made throughout my running career. You are doing incredibly hard workouts and pushing your body to the limits and seeing people at their most vulnerable, so the friendships that you make with your teammates come with so much respect because you know exactly what they are going through on a day to day basis unlike non-athletes.
What are some of your hobbies aside from running?
Aside from running, I love to spend the little free time I have painting or hanging out with friends. I started painting during high school as a way to relieve stress or to just pass the time when I had a day off of running or was on my break.
What's your favorite running memory so far in your career?
My favorite running memory so far in my career has to be winning a track state championship with my team, my senior year of high school. It was such an amazing meet for my team and I, and it was especially memorable because I have been running with some of my teammates since 4th grade. I placed 2nd in the 1600 and PR'ed and got 3rd In the 3200. It felt so rewarding to help my team accomplish this because we were going in as a team that had a chance to win, but we needed everyone to either PR or beat people they've never beat. But, we all worked for each other and accomplished something that other people didn't think was possible.
How did you prepare for a race? Do you have any superstitions?
To prepare for races, I try to calm myself down and try to not get too nervous. I try to keep it light and fun because racing should be fun, and I don't want to add any more pressure on myself that I don't need. I don't really have any superstitions, but I do like to have some type of braid in my hair for races and I typically wear one specific pair of socks for a whole season of racing.
What do you plan on studying at Oregon State?
I plan on studying Psychology!
What are some of your personal goals for this cross country and track season?
For cross country, one of my big goals is helping my team qualify for nationals and placing as high as possible. For track, I want to PR in all my events that I run this season.
What is your favorite type of music to listen to either before a race or on your own time?
My favorite type of music to listen to before I race is either rap or oldies.
How did running at Buchanan and throughout your high school career help shape you into a better runner? How did it feel to run at Nike Cross Nationals (NXN)?
Running at Buchanan was such an amazing experience and my coaches definitely shaped me into the runner that I am today. They have helped me develop throughout my four years there and have always believed in my through my highs and lows of my career. They taught me the importance of mental toughness as an athlete and also just provided me with the tools necessary to learn more about my sport and how to become a better runner overall. It has been a goal of mine since freshman year of high school to run at NXN, so being able to compete there twice was amazing. It taught me how to be bold during a race and to be calm when all you really want to do is panic. I feel like it definitely has prepared me to compete in large races like almost all my college races will be.
