Beavers Best Bruins, Start Pac-12 Play With Win
September 19, 2019 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team started off Pac-12 play with a win, as the Beavers took down UCLA 2-0 Thursday evening at Lorenz Field.
Â
"I thought the guys came out early and set a really good tone for the game," said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. "This was a game where both teams were going to have stretches of possession, and it was going to be about who could be more effective with it. I was happy with our time on the ball, and I was proud of our resiliency to defend and see the game out."
Â
The win is the Beavers' (4-3-0, 1-0-0 Pac-12) seventh-straight Pac-12 home victory, a streak that dates back to Oct. 22, 2017. Joel Walker scored his third goal of the season in the contest, while Sofiane Djeffal tallied a goal and an assist.
Â
The Beavers wasted little time drawing first blood, scoring just over two minutes into the match. Adrian Crespo played the ball a ball into the box, and Walker capitalized to finish from short range.
Â
Gloire Amanda came close to doubling the advantage in the 28th, when Walker played a low ball to the near post. Amanda put his shot on the frame, but the UCLA (3-3-0, 0-1-0) keeper made a nice reaction save.
Â
Djeffal gave the Beavers a second just before the half, when his corner curled to the back post and made its way into the net to send Oregon State to the break up 2-0.
Â
Walker nearly netted his second in the 60th, but his header at the back post was off target. Walker and Amanda both created chances in quick succession in the 67th. Walker found himself in on goal, but the Bruin keeper was quick off his line. Amanda got on the end of a cross from Crespo just moments later, but his effort drifted off frame.
Â
Adrian Fernandez came up with an important save in the 76th minute, making a nice reaction stop from close range. UCLA had another chance in the 85th but Kolade Salaudeen was able to clear it.
Â
Djeffal came close to another goal late on, as he worked his way brilliantly through the UCLA defense, but his shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
Â
As a team, Oregon State held an 11-9 advantage in shots, as it held its second clean sheet of the season.
Â
The Beavers will remain at Lorenz Field Sunday when San Diego State visits Corvallis. That match will start at 2 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
