
Beavers Dominate Match, Fall to GCU 1-0

Oregon State will return home Sunday to face UCSB
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Oregon State men's soccer team dominated the majority of the match, but was unable to overcome Grand Canyon Thursday evening, as the Lopes took a 1-0 win in Phoenix, Ariz.

GCU (3-1) scored the game's only goal against the run of play in the 45th minute. The Beavers (3-2) controlled possession in the match and out-shot Grand Canyon 20-5.

OSU got off to a strong start, creating a handful of chances within the first 10 minutes, including a pair of shots from Sofiane Djeffal. Gloire Amanda followed that up by forcing a save from close range, as he found himself in on goal from a tight angle in the 24th.

Adrian Crespo came within inches of netting his third goal of the year in the 31st, but the Grand Canyon keeper was quick to get down and tip the ball past the post. Joel Walker also nearly found the net in the 40th, but his effort was blocked by a Lope defender.

Grand Canyon scored against the run of play just seconds before the half, as the Lopes took a 1-0 advantage into the break. Oregon State out-shot GCU 11-1 in the first half.

The Beavers continued to control the possession to start the second 45 minutes, as they looked for an equalizer. Djeffal forced a save off a free kick in the 55th, and Oregon State came close again in the 62nd on a scramble in the box following its 10th corner kick of the match.

The equalizer nearly came in the 85th, when Djeffal whipped a free kick into the box that worked its way through a slew of player to the GCU keeper. Eric Diaz attempted to level things in the 88th, but he forced yet another save as the Lopes took the win.

Overall, Oregon State placed nine shots on goal and earned 11 corner kicks.

The Beavers will be back at Lorenz Field Sunday when UC Santa Barbara visits Corvallis. That game will start at 7 p.m.
