Four Beavers Place at Mountaineer Invite

BOONE, N.C. – The Oregon State Wrestling team opened up its season in North Carolina for the Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday afternoon. 13 wrestlers were in action as the team took on seven other schools at Appalachian State's annual tournament.
The Beavers wrapped up a successful outing to start the 2019-20 campaign and were led at 133 pounds by a first place showing from redshirt junior Devan Turner. The Beavers ultimately finished the tournament with four wrestlers earning placements in Turner, Brandon Kaylor (125 pounds), Jamarcus Grant (285 pounds) and J.J. Dixon (197 pounds).
Turner picked up a 10-6 decision in the final round over App. State's Codi Russell to earn his first victory of the season.
Sophomore Brandon Kaylor lost a close match in the opening round, 5-4, but would prevail with a pin over Garden Webb's John Jones in the consolation round. Kaylor continued his outing with a 4-1 decision in the semis before falling in the third place match to West Virginia's Joey Thomas by decision, 8-3, to end his day in fourth place. Fellow sophomore J.J, Dixon finished the day in fifth place after picking up a 12-7 decision in the consolation bracket before falling in the semis.
Jamarcus Grant, Brian Barnes and Christian Robertson represented at 285-pounds in the heavyweight division. Grant would finish the day in sixth place for the Beavers after staying alive in the consolation bracket with two wins.
Barnes picked up his first victory at Oregon State with a third period pinfall but fell in the quarterfinals to wrap up his day at the Mountaineer Invite. Robertson would pick up a 6-1 decision over Barnes in the consolation round but would end his day in the next bout.
Oregon State started the day with sophomore Conner Noonan in the first bout who opened with a takedown but lost by technical fall, 20-4, and fell to the consolation bracket. Noonan would pick up a first period pinfall but ultimately end the day 1-2 after falling 7-0 in the consolation finals.
Logan Meek wrestled in the next bout in round one and fell by technical fall to move to the consolation round where he ultimately ended his day.
Lane Stigall made his debut in the Orange & Black at 149 pounds where he lost a tight match to open the day in the quarterfinals, 13-11, before prevailing in the consolation round with a quick 7-0 decision. Stigall day would end in the next match as he fell by decision to Kent State's Kody Komara, 12-6.
Sophomore Jackson McKinney fell to the consolation bracket at 184 pounds where he lost a 3-2 decision to Jason Moomau of West Virginia.
Colt Doyle wrestled his way to the quarterfinals after a 5-1 win in the 184 weight class after racking up 4:33 of riding time. In the quarterfinals, Doyle fell by decision and would then fight his way through the consolation bracket and pick up a decision over Appalachian State's Mason Fiscella, 7-3. Doyle ended his day 2-2.
Next Up:
The Beavers are back on the mats next Friday, Nov. 15 for their first dual of the season against Simon Fraser in Tahoma, Wash.
