Men’s Golf Signs Two Student-Athletes
November 18, 2019 | Men's Golf
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State men's golf head coach Jon Reehoorn announced Monday that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the program beginning with the 2020-21 season.
The class includes Mateo Fuenmayor from Beaverton, Ore., and Alfred Raja Sitohang from Bogor, Indonesia.
"Mateo and Alfred will come to school next year with the opportunity to compete in the starting five and at the same time add depth to what will be a deep and strong team," Reehoorn said. "At some point these two will make a major impact on our program, but I hope our depth next year will allow them to step on campus, get comfortable in their new environment and not feel the pressure of making an impact immediately.
"The competition they will be surrounded by should hopefully allow them to just focus on playing their best golf and being pushed to get better every day."
Mateo Fuenmayor
Fuenmayor attends Mountainside High School in Beaverton and is the No. 1-ranked player in the state of Oregon. He's ranked No. 34 nationally in the class of 2020 and the 55th-ranked recruit according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard (NJGS).
This past summer he won the Metro League Championship and the Oregon Junior Golf Centennial Championship (68-63), finished second at the AJGA Junior at Big Sky (72-68-69) and Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship (73-68-71) and finished third at the Junior Americas Cup (65-71-75).
Fuenmayor finished in a tie for 28th at the competitive 44th PGA Junior Championship (75-66-66-67).
Jon Reehoorn on Mateo Fuenmayor:
"Mateo is an athlete who played just about every sport growing up. It wasn't really until the last year that he totally dedicated himself to golf. In that time his game has improved at a rapid pace and it showed in his tournaments results this past summer. If Mateo continues on his current pace with the work he puts in on a daily basis it will be fun to see they type of player he can become. Mateo has a game that will translate well to college golf because of his length and accuracy off the tee. His length allows him to be a pretty explosive player and make a bunch of birdies to shoot low scores as he did this summer."
Alfred Raja Sitohang
Raja Sitohang is ranked No. 37 in the class of 2020 and the 60th-ranked recruit according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard (NJGS). He's a member of the Indonesian National team that will compete Dec 5-8 at the South East Asia Games.
This past summer he was the medalist at the AJGA Eagle Crest (68-69-71), finished third at the Indonesia National Amateur and fourth at both the AJGA Junior at San Jose (72-71-67) and FCG Callaway World Championship (69-68-70),
Jon Reehoorn on Alfred Raja Sitohang:
"Alfred came to the US this summer and had some great success in the AJGA events he played, including the win at the AJGA in Bend, Oregon. It was during the event in Bend where we had the opportunity to get to know Alfred and his family during a visit to campus and immediately felt he would be a perfect fit for our program. Alfred is a very consistent player from tee to green. He isn't the type of player that will blow you away in just watching him hit a few shots, but when the round is over his score is usually right around par because of the way he approaches each shot and manages his way around the course."
