Beavers Capture Seventh at NCAA West Regionals
November 15, 2019 | Women's Cross Country
COLFAX, Wash. – Highlighted by Lexi Reed's 28th place finish, the Oregon State Cross Country team made its run to nationals during the NCAA West Regionals on Friday in Colfax, Wash.
Facing wet and windy conditions, the Beavers ran to a seventh place finish at Colfax Golf Club. Oregon State faced a talented field of nationally ranked teams out of the West Region including No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Washington, No. 13 Boise State, No. 19 Oregon and No. 30 California Baptist.
The Beavers came into the event ranked No. 7 in the West Region and looked to improve on their team score after racing to their highest regional finish in program history last season with a sixth place finish.
A strong race and resilient mindset helped the Beavers finish the women's race in seventh place with a team score of 248 points. After leading the way at the Pac-12 Championships, redshirt junior Lexi Reed once again paced the Beavers by finishing in 28th place with a time of 20:37.1. Reed finished just three spots shy of earning All-Region Honors and improved 17 spots from last year's race.
"I'm so proud of the women," head coach Louie Quintana said. "The Pac-12 and West Region is very tough and we have battled well all season. We must remember our youth and that these women are pioneers at OSU. We were good today and left it all out there and that's all I could ever ask for."
The Beavers showcased a strong middle pack during the women's 6K race including Audrey Lookner, Haley Wolf and Greta Van Calcar.
Lookner finished in 47th place by clocking in at 20:57.8. Sophomore Haley Wolf finished right behind Lookner in 50th place as she navigated the 6,000-kilometer course in 21:00.4. Van Calcar was the fourth Beaver to cross the finish line as she finished in 57th place (21:03.7). Freshman Meagen Lowe had a promising race as she moved up six spots to finish in 66th place (21:12.2).
Freshman Gabby Peterson finished in 90th while Batya Beard rounded out the scoring in 112th for the Beavers.
"I'm sad for the women that we won't be advancing to the NCAA meet but we are amongst the top ten percent of programs now," Quintana said. "It's always a great day to be a Beav."
