QUOTEABLES
Oregon State Head Cross Country Coach Louie Quintana – "It's the biggest meet of the year for us. We're treating this meet like the NCAA Championships since a lot of things are out of our control. What we can control is executing our race plan, going out and competing really hard and putting ourselves in a good position to be as completive as we possibly can."
WOMEN ENTRIES:
Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal St. Fullerton, California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, Idaho, Long Beach St., Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento St., San Diego, San Diego St., San Francisco, San Jose St., Santa Clara, Seattle U., St. Mary's (Cal.), Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, UNLV, Washington, Washington State
LAST TIME OUT:
With the help of Lexi Reed's 28th-place finish, the Beavers finished in seventh place at the Pac-12 Championships in Monmouth, Ore. The Beavers had 197 team points at Ash Creek Preserve. (Nov. 1).
MAKING HISTORY:
Through six weeks of voting, the Beavers are currently receiving votes in the NCAA D1 Women's Cross Country National Poll. The team has received votes for four of those six weeks and broke into the national rankings through weeks three and four.
After beating out two ranked teams at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 28, Oregon State checked in at No. 24 in the national poll in Week 3 (10/1) and No. 25 in Week 4 (10/8) for their highest placement on a national poll in program history.
"We've come a long way in a short period of time, for sure," Quintana said. "I also know how difficult it is to get into those rankings. In order for us to make the jump we've done since two years ago, we had to improve in a short amount of time."
Heading into Friday's race, the Beavers sit at No. 7 in the West Region. The Beavers ranked fifth in the west region for the first four weeks of the season.
NATURAL NEWCOMERS:
Oregon State boasts a top-15 recruiting class as reported by The Stride Report with four freshmen already having national championship experience in high school. The Beavers return 11 runners from last year's squad while also bringing in 11 runners, making up an experienced and balanced roster.
The roster is made up of eight freshmen and three transfers. Three of the freshmen hail from California with the transfers coming from Harvard, Colorado and Treasure Valley Junior College. The Viking Rust Buster was a great start for the newcomers as four freshmen finished in the top-10 with two in the top-five.
Freshman Meagen Lowe competed in her first collegiate 6K during the Bill Dellinger Invitational (9/28) where she was one of the top-five Beavers to finish. Lowe traversed the course with a time of 20:49.9 to finish in 46th place. Fellow freshman Gabby Peterson was the second Beavers to cross the finish line in the championship at the prestigious Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational with a time of 21:23.6.
LOUIE, LOUIE:
In only his third season in Corvallis, head coach Louie Quintana has shown that Oregon State is primed to compete at a national level and can make some noise while given the opportunity. The 2018-19 season laid the groundwork for what this program could do as the team qualified for nationals for the first time in school history and also attained their highest finish at the regional and conference meets.
Quintana has continued racking up milestones this season as he achieved his first perfect score in over 20 years of coaching at the season-opening Viking Rust Buster with 15 points. The Beavers swept the meet and finished six-strong with eight in the top-10 to help secure the team victory. Quintana also guided the team to their highest ever national ranking at No. 24 in Week 3 of the national poll.
