Beavers Drop Match At Cal
October 03, 2019 | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif.  – The Oregon State men's soccer team was unable to overcome California Thursday afternoon, as the Beavers fell 2-1 in their first Pac-12 defeat of the season.
Joel Walker found the net for Oregon State, notching his team-leading fourth goal of the season.Â
The Beavers held a 17-15 advantage on shots in the match, and controlled 57 percent of the possession.
California opened the scoring less than two minutes in on a shot that was scorched from the top of the box. Sofiane Djeffal narrowly missed leveling things just minutes later on a shot that curled just outside the post.
Djeffal created another chance in the 18th on a free kick, but it was just over the crossbar. Arnaud Deniel nearly headed one home in the 25th, but the Cal keeper made the save.
Walker equalized in the 27th, as Alex Cover put him in behind the Cal defense with a ball over the top. Walker worked his way around the keeper before finishing from a tight angle.
Oregon State increased the attacking pressure from there, as Adrian Crespo had a pair of shots blocked. Overall, the Beavers finished the first half with 11 shots and four corner kicks.
Eric Diaz created the Beavers' first chance of the second half, knocking one over the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 52nd. Walker nearly netted a second five minutes later, when Gloire Amanda's touch put him in on goal, but the Cal keeper was quick off his line.
OSU came close to converting on a counter-attack in the 68th, but was unable to connect on the final pass. Cal went ahead two minutes later on a penalty kick. Joe Hafferty nearly equalized on a volley that rocketed just over the frame.
Javier Armas forced a save with a shot in the 88th, as the Beavers looked to force overtime. Oregon State followed that up with a corner moments later, but Cal was able to hang on to take the win by a goal.
The Beavers will head across the Bay Sunday for a matchup with No. 2 Stanford.
Prior to the game, the United Soccer Coaches announced that Oregon State had received the Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 school year.
