Beavers head to Wisconsin for Nuttycombe Invitational
October 15, 2019 | Women's Cross Country
Oregon State faces a loaded field in a high-caliber meet during Friday's Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Cross Country will finish out the regular season slate this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to compete in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 18. The team will travel to Madison for the second year in a row as the women beat out two ranked teams en route to a 16th place finish in last year's race.
The Beavers will face off against more than 30 teams, including a long list of ranked opponents with six teams inside the top-ten of the current national poll. Arkansas will represent the number one team in the country for the women.
"We're ranked as the 17th highest team in this meet which tells you how deep this race is," head coach Louie Quintana said. "I think our goal is to run to our ranking and run with a national caliber field. There are good teams behind us and teams that aren't ranked who could make a push so we just have to take what we can get, be competitive and utilize our instincts.
The Nuttycombe will feature two races per gender, with the women running a 6,000-meter race. Oregon State will compete in the women's "B" race at 9 a.m. PT and women's "A" race at 10:20 a.m PT.
The women look to continue a stellar 2019 campaign, coming off of a top-five finish at the Dellinger Invitational on Sep. 28 where the Beavers beat out two ranked teams. As a team, the Beavers also swept the season-opening Viking Rust Buster to achieve a perfect score of 15 points.
At the Dellinger Invitational, sophomores Haley Wolf, Mari Friedman and senior Lexi Reed finished within ten spots of each other to secure a top-five finish and help the team jump into the national polls for the highest program ranking at No. 25.
When the Beavers hit the course at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the women will be led in the "A" race by a group that propelled the team to strong finishes during the first two races of the season. A familiar lineup of runners will take to the startling line including sophomores Mari Friedman and Haley Wolf, redshirt juniors Lexi Reed and Greta Van Calcar and freshmen Gabby Peterson and Meagen Lowe. Friedman's performance at the Dellinger Invite was essential to the team's top-five finish as the sophomore finished 32nd to help propel the Beavers past No. 14 Furman and No. 24 UCLA.
Additionally, two Beavers will compete during Saturday's Lewis & Clark Invite in Estacada, Oregon. Freshmen Annika Sundstrom and Sydni Nedza will compete in the women's 6K race at 12 p.m. at McIver State Park. Results at the conclusion of the race can be found here.

Last Time Out:
The Beavers last ran collectively at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., beating out No. 18 Furman and No. 24 UCLA for a top-five finish on Sep. 28. Oregon State's top-seven runners stayed as a pack as they only had a 25-second split between their respective times. Sophomores Mari Friedman and Haley Wolf led as the top two runners for the Beavers, finishing at 20:36.3 and 20:42.6.
Moving On Up:
Through four weeks of voting, the Beavers currently sit at No. 25 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) national polls which they broke into after beating out two nationally ranked teams at the Bill Dellinger Invite.
"We've come a long way in a short period of time, for sure," Quintana said. "I also know how difficult it is to get into those rankings. In order for us to make the jump we've done since two years ago, we had to improve in a short amount of time."
The Beavers still sit at No. 5 in the west regional rankings after four weeks of voting.
Natural Newcomers:
Oregon State boasts a top-15 recruiting class as reported by The Stride Report with four freshmen already having national championship experience in high school. The Beavers return 11 runners from last year's squad while also bringing in 11 runners, making up an experienced and balanced roster.
The roster is made up of eight freshmen and three transfers. Three of the freshmen hail from California with the transfers coming from Harvard, Colorado and Treasure Valley Junior College. The Viking Rust Buster was a great start for the newcomers as four freshmen finished in the top-10 with two in the top-five.
Freshman Meagen Lowe competed in her first collegiate 6K during the Bill Dellinger Invitational (9/28) where she was one of the top-five Beavers to finish. Lowe traversed the course with a time of 20:49.9 to finish in 46th place.
